Planet Ill Breakdown: Mickey Factz-Paradise

By Odeisel

Paradise exists in our minds as a place of lush perfection; the final reward for the hell on Earth. Mickey Factz hasn’t departed this plane of existence, but it seems his hard work and dedication to his craft would seen to have reaped his professional reward with his recent Battery records signing and his impending major label debut. His video for the track “Paradise” feels like the culmination of polish with a bit of hood soot sprinkled on top for the appropriate level of gully.

The track, produced by Precize, goes many places while keeping the slow to mid tempo rhythm.  Distortion, muffled drums, hand claps and reoccurring sound effects combine with flashing images of the Bronx projects of Factz’ origin create an urban homey feel, devoid of the angry dystopia generally attached to the projects but still possessed of that hood toughness.

Mickey’s vocalas are slow and assertive and his voice undulates controlling the mood as it pertains to the specific part of the song, which many rappers in his class haven’t mastered as of yet. This is certainly harder than what you’re used to hearing from Factz, and a departure from the hipsterism that colored his earlier incarnation.  This is a solid place for him vocally and stylistically; one that captures the urban aesthetic without forcing him to live up to the hyper-masculine nonsense that accompanies those images. He can still be smart and not be a sucker. It fits. Good place to reside, the “Paradise.” Hope the remainder of the album is this solid. Enjoy.
