You’re in the club. Your Bentley is parked outside. You’re buying thousands of dollars in alcohol. You have world class ladies at your beck and call and then some hater meanders over to the velvet rope that separates you from the club peasants. He looks right at you and your posse and well… hates.
It happens to me every weekend and I swear it’s such a buzz kill.
How do you respond to that lame raining all over your parade? If you’re a lady you toss your hair and put your hand on your hip to give the situation some drama. Then you put your bottle of Krug in the air and tell them, “Yep, that’s me. Yup.”
On paper that line lacks the je ne sais quoi that makes an ego driven self big up grand. However, if you surround that line with lots of bass, spacey synth, frenetic drums and have your own chorus of people co-signing in the form of background “Yeahs!” then it works.
Foxx switches up his delivery throughout the song adding some playfulness. He sort of raps. He sort of sings, but he’s definitely targeting the club and anyone who wants to pat themselves on the back just for being there.
The song is tapped here and there with Soulja Boy tags. He never materializes, but the king does.
T.I.’s delivery is slow, steady and precise. Again, he reminds us he’s fresh out of the pen. With the accent almost gone, the few flashes of southern slang he uses almost sound contrived. There are a few shots at the stop snitching brigade who won’t let his minimal prison sentence rest in peace. Maybe if he stops mentioning it, they will too. It’s just a thought.
For what it is, it’s not bad. We would be fine as a culture if we never heard another “for the haters” song ever again. However, if you must, take a hint from Jamie Foxx and bathe it in so much hubris and thump that the folks at the club can’t help but to bob their heads. Everybody deserves a little self-love under the strobes. Yep.
