Petitions have been put out, and we are no closer to having LASERS than before, but what we have seen is a steady flow of new Lupe material to keep his fan-base satisfied. There have been guest appearances on remixes, a rock album, and mixtapes featuring unreleased older music. There have also been new morsels including this particular joint, “Go To Sleep.”
Over a slow, melancholy beat, Lupe adopts a slow drowsy flow with a rhyme scheme that keeps for differing increments, from 4 bars to 8 bars to 6 bars at different instances. His cadence is a bit flat and does lead to high energy at all but that’s now what this song is about. He’s reluctantly getting back into the game, honoring those who have passed on and taking up the cross for his fans that have gone so long without his new material. He proclaims himself the “coldest n***a alive.”
The title refers to him putting the lights out on all emcees with the audacity to believe they are better than him. The sleepwalking delivery is another mark of his innate arrogance as a lyricist, noting that even at half speed he runs laps around them. Dense and interconnecting lines form throughout including, “Getting up and going hard, I don’t need no Enzyte” and “they needed a hero so I guess I’m back to dope again.” The last verse finds him taking a slight faux island cadence for a few bars.
The beat itself is a collection of simple elements. The piano is sparse and the drum is slow and spare. A soulful simple wail sits atop the beat eventually combining with hyperfast digital strings to form the bulk of the track.
It’s not his brightest light nor is it his darkest day, but while his fans await his arrival it’s suitable sustenance. “Go To Sleep.” Enjoy.
