Drake has been a bit prolific in the aftermath of his major label debut Thank Me Later. Some tracks were probably throwaways from the album and sound very similar to the output on the work. Others are clearly reference tracks for some artist to be named later. They have all had a similar emo vein to them, eschewing the swagger drake had established on his run to the top for sobbing odes to lost hoes and broken wishes. Well we got a new track that is thankfully a departure from crybaby Drake with his latest, “I’m Ready For You.”
Heavy synth and hard drums color the beat on this and a dynamic bassline is buttressed by keys and a throbbing bump. The extended chorus and the transformer noise ramp up momentum and the non loop structure adds excitement to the rhythm, keeping the ears attentive. His rapped verse falls over the bare beat sans the extra synth, bells and whistles.
Lyrically, the chorus and the singing characterize the first half of the song, but not with the slow melancholy that plagued the middle of his album. They are closer to R&B in rhythm and feel. There is a confidence in his delivery that belies the hung head kick rocks emotion he’s been hitting us with lately. Lyrically he’s spot on, crafting a full narrative with the chick he’s now ready for and he’s pouring it on heavy.
This is a Drake you can get with. The music is not boring by any means and his lyrics don’t lean on his patented punch line setups; he just delivers and keeps it moving. Perhaps he is ready for the next phase in the evolution of his sound. “I’m Ready For You.” Thank me later.

Not really thrilled with this… 🙁
His rhyme verse isn’t at all something to be impressed by.
