You remember “Love Like This.” About half of it was featured in an odd Youtube video a few months back with Donell Jones standing in front of a picture of a house equivalent to one of those sheet backgrounds you find in the hole in the wall club. He stood there for half the song without singing; just bouncing and adjusting his shades. It was like some weird Wee World without the comments.
Anyway, that was a snippet of the alleged first single from Mr. Jones’ next album, Lyrics. The full song is floating around now and it’s smooth and sexy; just what we expect from the Chi-town crooner.
The production is electro airy with a keyboard that makes it sound loungey, but not in a cheesy way. The digital atmospherics swirl around and between the lyrics about having it bad for someone who’s riding the fence on commitment. It’s a plea for that yes; a monologue crafted to make her mind up for her. The song evokes some old fashioned down on one knee treatment and it’s very persuasive.
Jones is smoky, but the passion is quiet. He’s far from that overwrought run, screaming and howling type of vocalist. No shots at those who get it in like Sunday at the Holy Rollers, but sometimes taking it down a notch or ten is just as satisfying. Jones sounds great as usual in that easy breezy Saturday morning kind of way and “Love Like This” definitely provides reason to check what the rest of Donell’s Lyrics is sounding like.
