Most singers don’t make a whole bunch of money. Also, there are about 53 singers per i-tunes customer. Did you know the average number of first week sales for an album on i-tunes is 1? And that was probably the producer’s mom.
That doesn’t stop people from tossing their hats into this ring; even people who have perfectly decent careers in other areas of entertainment. Gweneth Paltrow gave us some country diddy a couple weeks ago. (Don’t forget her cover of Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’” a while back as well featuring the incomparable Huey Lewis (no news.) Now we have Eva Mendes dropping mostly spoken word lyrics over some tongue and cheek 70’s production.
“Pimps Don’t Cry” is from the soundtrack for Will Ferrell’s latest flick The Other Guys. Mendes is in the movie so think of this as more of a stab at proper budgeting for the film’s Executive Producer than an actual step into the music business for the actress. She’s pitted against the always eclectic CeeLo Green who must go out of his way to find the most peculiar projects he can. Take it as shits and giggles, as I’m sure the point was, and you might just enjoy this.
Eva spends the first half of the song explaining why she doesn’t feel loved or respected. Her friends have been telling her he loves his money and the game more than he loves her. His pet name for her is trick or girl 5 so they might just be right. He then spends the next verse explaining why she isn’t correct. He has tears in his eyes and well, pimps don’t cry. Case closed.
Shouts to Some Kind Of Awesome for the heads up.
