Harlem has had its time in the history of Hip-Hop. While the style and the flavor of the Manhattan village has influenced songs and fashion related to Hip-Hop, its MC legacy is a bit slimmer than the other bouroughs. There were flashes of brilliance like Easy AD from the Cold Crush, Dougie Fresh, Big L, Cam’ron, Black Rob et al. Others, like Q-Tip may have been born in Harlem but took their legacies elsewhere. Rapper Ilacoin stands as next in lyrical lineage to take the stage with the Harlem in his veins.
His new mixtape, helmed by DJ One Shot Deal is entitled Harlem’s Best Kept Secret: Episode 0, and has the dual purpose of both getting new listeners familiar with him as an artists and setting the table for his coming work. The two disk opus spans over 10 years and serves as an audio curriculum vitae, showing not only his body of work, but other artists that have lent their voices to his cause over the past decade. Cosigned he certainly is. Its an expansive listen, and you know I’m not a fan of tremendously long mixtapes, but this serves as a library edition, and something to digest at leisure.
Take your time, listen in chunks and get to know Ilacoin. His work comes from a lot of areas and tackles many things. Harlem on the rise? Perhaps. We look forward to what’s new and what’s next from the emcee. Harlem’s Best Kept Secret Episode 0. Enjoy.
