And The Beat Goes On: Dondria Has 21 Questions, Bekay Has a Good Day and Jeezy Has Some ‘Splainin To Do

By shelz.

Evening folks.  Planet Ill is back with a weekly dose of track theft and cover love for those who think making their own song is a little too much like work.  BMF is no longer a viable option around these parts though.  The fact that artists line up in droves to step on a track that has seen more rappers come and go than Katt is just ridiculous.

Jeezy should bring the curtain down on this song as he hopes and prays the song doesn’t bring the curtain down on him.  Truth in advertising in Hip-Hop is a thing of the past Mr. Snowman.  You should know.  Anyway, just in case you haven’t caught it, here is Jeezy not dissin Ross.

We are going to start off with Dondria’s “No More.” It’s not really a freestyle.  However, since JD’s production hangs so close to the tracks he samples from, it may as well be.  He plucks a guitar sample from 50’s “21 Questions” that originally came from Barry Whites “Its Only Love Doing Its Thing.” He adds a little flair and voila, a new song.  I can’t say I’m looking forward to this album and that’s a shame because Dondria really is a talented girl.

Next is a song from one of the many “The Miseducation of…” tapes that seem to be the rage these days.  I say we do something about these schools.  Anyhow, Audra The Rapper picks up her mixtape title from Lauryn Hill, her track, “Grinding,” from Skateboard P and she has bars like a jail cell. As a matter of fact, she says like a lot.  The simile is slowly turning into the bane of Hip-Hop’s existence, next to swag.

Moving on brings us to Kuniva of D12 who recently released his Midwest Marauders mixtape.  I didn’t see any ATCQ tracks, but he did throw some lyrics over Drake’s “Fear.”  The computer generated voice is hella gully and Koniva gets real thoughtful as he takes us on a walk through his hood and introduces us to the folks he calls friends.

Bekay is next with his “Today Was a Good Day.”  He pays homage to Cube and Pooh who payed homage to The Isley Brothers with this simplest of loops from “Footsteps in the Dark.”  Bekay is more enthusiastic in his delivery than cube which sounds funny on this track, but I likes anyway.

Last but not least is another Mark Ronson concoction out of Cali called The Like.  Maybe you have seen them before.  They played Coachella, have opened for Kings of Leon and even made the obligatory alt-rock Target commercial.  Below though, they are backstage with a guitar and a violin giving a rather pretty cover of the Shirelles “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.”
