Lupe Fiasco is in the middle of a battle for the life of Lasers, or at least the life of its release date. Atlantic is hesitant, Lupe is ready and the fans are at wit’s end. In the interim he’s given up Japanese Cartoon’s In The Jaws Of The Lords Of Death for the bargain basement price of $free.99, but if electro rock isn’t your steez, Lupe has graciously handed over a new freestyle snatching up Lex Luger’s B.M.F. track for its foundation.
The delivery is easy, very easy for Fiasco’s standards and that whisper of a drawl is a take on the double R’s sound, no doubt. It takes some getting used to, but anything beats what he learned in Madonna’s fake English accent class.
The lyrics are a bit schizophrenic. He moves from the army to O.G.s to drugs. There are oil spills in Nigeria, fat people in the U.S. and heroin in Afghanistan. Shots are thrown. He goes in on punks that purr and a certain ex-producer who popped way more than 140 characters of shit in @LupeFiasco’s general direction a few days ago on Twitter. Then there is the obligatory Chilly shout.
The man is lyrically adept and can always produce something better than average even when his rhymes aren’t as slippery as we know they can be. The comparisons to revolutionaries I can take or leave and Mr. Fiasco doesn’t even seem interested in grabbing his own crown, let alone helping others grab theirs. As always, I wish him luck and I’m still looking forward to Lasers, but honestly, if Fiasco was as Tyler Durden as he seemed to be feeling when he recorded this joint, he could probably get his album a release date.
