Goapele’s music is powerful. It stands out among her contemporaries in not only its freedom but its focus. Her latest song typifies this theme in both name and function. The track, entitled “Different” enlists the aid of like-minded creative spirit Mos Def to amplify just how different she is. That Mos is on the track is a credit to Goapele’s music.
The track itself begins with airy synths and a funky, yet moody guitar before giving way to a deep, heavy drum and clap-like noises. Goapele’s delivery is remorseful, lamenting a changing relationship, wishing against reality that things could be “different.” Her lament is light and feathery on the break, and her vocal runs are well within her range; executed with just the right amount of emotion.
Mos Def drops in after the first verse with one of his own, delivered in his trademark smooth melodic voice. His words are a bit more optimistic about the state of their relationship, perhaps knowing how bad she still wants to stay but clearly not aware that she “feels like it’s over, baby.” His delivery isn’t laser sharp but
i LOVE it, i LOVE it! and i possibly love it more because i’m a bay to bk kinda gal. <3
This song came out about 4 years ago! It didn’t have MOS DEF on it though.
