Trailer Treat: Tron Legacy

By Odeisel

Many 80s movies were focused on the conceptualization of how the future would be. They focused not on the alien a la Star Wars, but on how the future would be on terra firma. These films were preoccupied with finding out whether an Orwellian future would manifest. There were movies like Mad Max and The Terminator,  that dealt with post- apocalyptic dystopia. Then there were movies like Back To The Future that whimsically dealt with possible alternate futures and others like Robocop and The Blade Runner that dealt with hyper-stylized corporate run cities overrun by the aftermath of lawless decadence. Then there was Tron.

Tron was one of the very first movies to use the power of computer graphics from the burgeoning gaming industry to effect its production.  The look of the movie was very advanced and stood out immediately from its contemporaries. So much so that it actually inspired a video game itself, as well as comic book adaptations and a video game sequel to the movie.  That streak continues with Tron: Legacy (which of course has a video game tie in).

The movie takes place as the original film’s protagonist Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) disappeared into the cyber world and had been missing for 20 years.  His son a computer whiz inadvertently discovers the cyber world and realizes that his father is alive and that’s when the real fun begins. Trailer looks good and the extra roughly 30 years of technological advances, Imax 3-D, and the wallet of Walt Disney almost guarantees at least a dazzling presentation. Enough from me.  Enjoy.
