What’s the word to our Planet Ill fam before everyone jumps off the weekend?
After a week of finding out via text messages professional golfer Tiger Woods is a freak who likes his side heaux/females to fix him sandwiches, the utter retardation of the Texas Educational system wanting to change their history books and more (NO coverage about institutional racism in the United States, really?!) and some other things, its time to relax a tad and get into hitting the masses with another installment of Indiesent Exposure.
For those who are new to this section, this is the weekly music column where folks drop some FREE quality music downloads & information about artists from the Independent music community who deserve more exposure and props for keeping their various genres lively & original.
Hopefully by each post, Planet Ill’s Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some temporary respite from some of the daily audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio and TV airwaves’ definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.
If you like what you hear & download (some joints of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc. At the end of the day, music artists need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.
To blast off this week’s Indiesent Exposure session, we’ve grabbed up some dope full music album releases and a mix that takes a walk on the Jazz , Hip-Hop and Dub exits of the Music Highway.
Please check out everything below from these talented artists and the Planet Ill family know what you think when you get the chance – hope everyone enjoys the selections!
Let’s get into it:
Argentina Born/Los Angeles, California (via Koreatown) raised Hip-Hop MC Dumbfoundead has been representing dope quality music making for years as a part of the Project Blowed collective as well as through his on various solo releases, guest album appearances, live performance spots (including those with Atmosphere, E-40, KRS-One, Busdriver, GZA and more) and group collaborations.
Having a foundation as a youth of working with some of Los Angeles’ Hip-Hop foundation heads such as Mark Luv of Zulu Nation and EZ Rock of Rocksteady, the influence of both old school and new school Hip-Hop definitely shows thorugh Dumbfoundead’s creative output.
Through his mix of crazy but down to earth lyricism, high energy, solid beat selection for his style (a hot beat means next to NOTHING if it doesn’t fit them the MC’s delivery style) and being an engaging performer who ably balances out his battle side, songwriting & storytelling talents as an MC.
Dumbfoundead dropped the solo album Super Barrio Bros. along with producer 8-Bit Bandit in 2005 and has placed it out there as a cool flashback of his audio history for the people to jam to for Free.99 (a.k.a no money/free).
With 8-Bit Bandit literally going off of his name with the video game and other various electronic sounds over some thumping beats, Dumbfoundead goes heavy off of each production and nimbly doesn’t fall into the trap of “he’s so lyrical, I’m going to go to sleep” action that sometimes happens in the independent Hip-Hop scene.

San Francisco’s Justin “J-Boogie” has been putting his unique touch on multiple music genres (Dub, Soul, Hip–Hop, Reggae, Funk, Latin, Afro-Beat and more) officially for over the past two decades as a prolific producer and club, radio and mix DJ.
Through a long career of doing remixes, production and opening up with DJ sets for artists as diverse as Alice Russell, Mark Farina, Goapele, Spearhead, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Louie Vega, DJ Krush and more, J-Boogie has also put in a lot of work through his official album releases via the Om Records label.
J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science project is one of his creative outputs organically incorporating musicians, DJ skills, and vocalists of all genre types into a live & hype fusion set of music and grooves.
The first album release by Dubtronic Science was put out in 2003 and every few years, one after the other of these collaborations have dropped to the masses.
This Indiesent Exposure pick is for the crew that really likes the deep thump Dub style of Reggae music, J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science – Soul Vibrations: Dub Remixes.
With all of the vocalists and sounds going through the dub box (including guests Lyrics Born, Zumbi of Zion I, Crown City Rockers, Ohmega Watts, Rich Medina, Jennifer Johns and more) and some tweaking of the original production, this music is definitely some zone out, rocksteady type of music to properly jump off spring 2010 to.

Lastly, we’re wrapping things up for this week’s Indiesent Exposure with the modern day jazz classic commissioned piece Here…Now. that was done the Wynton Marsalis Septet in 2007.
It’s a really nice piece of work and a cool listen by the jazz collective (consisting of members Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Wessel Anderson on alto sax, Victor Goines on tenor & soprano sax, Ronald Westray & Vincent Gardner on trombone, Richard Johnson on piano, Gerald Cannon & Kengo Nakamura on bass and Ali Jackson on drums).
Here…Now. has gotten into the internet’s music rotation as an official free download directly from composer, songwriter & jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
Here’s a description of album’s interesting creation and history:
Here…Now., is a ballet choreographed by Judith Jamison for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The piece is dedicated to and inspired by the triple Gold medalist at the 1988 Olympics, runner Florence Griffith Joyner, “Flojo”, who died of an epileptic seizure at the age of 38.
Wynton Marsalis’ specially commissioned music is edgy and frenetic reflecting the pace of athletes in training and competition, themes also reflected in Judith Jamison’s choreography. Costumer Emilio Sosa captured Flojo’s glamour with her six inch nails and colorful running clothes, and Al Crawford’s brilliantly abstract lighting and set evoked the actions in and around the track.
Check out more information about what’s currently going on lately with Wynton Marsalis, his past history, touring info and more over at his official website at http://WyntonMarsalis.org.
