Of course the last green deals with love. Not the love of money or things, but something much more organic. We’re going to take a few peeks into music made just for the stoner culture. Our last green is weed and as far as love goes, Ganja may be able to pull rank on the fairer sex because dudes love to sing about getting high. Some have focused whole albums on it. Others sprinkle the songs around like whatever it is they mix with their bud. But one thing is for certain, you have a built in fanbase if you give folks something to smoke to.
Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Kurupt – “Next Episode”
This song would get mentioned on this list even if Snoop said nothing about weed. (He does by the way.) This song makes the list for Nate Dogg’s errantly timed, out of nowhere exclamation at the end. “Smoke weed everyday!” People knew this song by that one little part for years and I had to argue people down that it wasn’t the title. Next time you listen to it, try to catch that part perfectly. I’ll bet a million dollars you can only do it if you’re high.

Ray Charles – “Let’s Go Get Stoned”
I have a hard time thinking about my grandparents singing this song, but it is what it is. It’s a smooth jazz tune from a man who was known as much for his drug problems as he was known for his music. We know Ray took this mantra to heart a little too much and a little too often. Hell, it may not even be about weed. Just remember, “ain’t nothing wrong with taking a nip, but don’t fall down and bust your lip.” Wise words sir. Wise words indeed.

Outkast – “Crumblin’ Herb”
From the debut that set the tone of the Southern Renaissance, Outkast dropped some lyrics over a light airy track with some serious jazz fusion sensibilities. Life is rough. Most of us have a lot on our plate, but you still have to take time to chill, rest and smoke out til you choke out. Word to those fat hoes sitting in corn flakes. (I have no idea what that means. Check the song and then you tell me.)

Rick James – “Mary Jane”
We know that this song spawned plenty of mini Mary Jane’s like Redman’s “Smoke Buddah” and The Alcoholiks “Mary Jane,” so we’ll just take the original. At the height of his career, Rick James would toss joints out into the audience when he performed this song. He and his turned on audience then turned the concert into a hazy, high group experience as they begged in unison for the weed to say “I love you too.”

Peter Tosh – “Legalize It”
The title is obvious and Peter’s issue was the hypocrisy of the drug laws. The judge sentencing you for that possession conviction was probably high last night, or that’s at least the idea of the song. Then on top of that, it’s easy reggae at its best. A very smooth Caribbean beat perfect for lighting up. Plus he totally puts his lawyer on blast, lists all the diseases that can possibly cured with a lil puff puff pass and says that even ants like to get high. Who knew?

The Luniz + Everyone else from the Bay- “I Got 5 On It (The Remix)”
The song put out the word that the Luniz needed some help getting their stash together. When the song was revisited, it was obvious that found their investors because damn near half the Bay area showed up on the remix. It’s a nice, mellow track that was laced with diverse styles and flows and confirms that black people can get together and make their money work if they have a common goal.

Cypress Hill – “I Wanna Get High”
Of course when going through Cypress Hill’s catalog its hard to just pick one song about weed, but this is my personal favorite. The track is perfectly suited to subject matter and B-Real’s singing is just glorious. This is probably the most effectual weed love song ever.
