And The Beat Goes On: Stat Quo, Papoose and Lil Wayne At The Office

By shelz.

Even though love for an artist and their craft is totally subjective, many fans do give a second and even third chance to that dude they just cant get with.  There may be a huge buzz or it could be that your cousin just won’t shut up about this cat’s skills.  You listen and listen and listen; song after song waiting for the light bulb to come on.  Hoping that one of those songs will make you a believer so you can participate in all those long winded conversations about how he’s the truth. It doesn’t happen though.

You don’t hear it, probably never will.  That’s my dilemma with some of the below artists.  These guys have co-signs stuffed in all of their pockets.  Folks from here to there to everywhere laud their rhyme skills, but when I push play they fade into the meh emcee cosmos. Call me crazy or a bearer of bad taste if you want to.  I just don’t get it.

Yet I continue to try; waiting patiently for the epiphany.  Maybe it’s buried in one of the songs below.

Papoose – “Puttin In Twork”

Fakers, folks with no heart, dudes who are prey get stalked and stomped by Mr. Papoose.  He doesn’t like skinny jeans but he throws a nod to General Larry Platt confirming that yes you do look like a fool with your pants on the ground. Guess he rocks ‘em smedium. There’s talk of his niceness with a mic and crudeness if dudes don’t act right (hey, that rhymes.) Anyway, still no light bulb.  It’s a predictable gangsta monologue.  He’s not bad, but I’m still not buying. Oh, he’s rapping over “Over.” Sigh.

Stat Quo – “Mars Vs. Venus Freestyle”

I’m not mad at this.  Maybe it has more to do with the track than the emcee.  He does provide a bit of balance in his delivery; slight changes here and there.  There is also some realism in his lyrics, smartly interwoven between tales of money, pills, hoes and courtside Lake Show seats.  He’s been around for a minute, as has his mythical debut album that has yet to be released.  Maybe this dude is more talented than I originally thought.  We shall see.

Intuition – “Brown Sugar”

Instead of just snatching the track, Mr. Intuition inserts himself as a feature just to ensure you will listen.  You get invested in the jam, forget he’s coming and then all of the sudden there he is.  This is drug as lady rap.  What’s a little odd about this piece is there is no derision for the addiction.  He loves his heroin, and communicates no desire to leave the love of his life.  Interesting and disturbing at the same time. This is from his new mixtape, I Ruined These Songs For You.  Not ruined Mr. Intuition, not ruined at all.

Okay, enough of the folks I’m on the fence about.  Lets get to stuff I really wanted to listen to this week.

Lil Wayne – “Office Musik”

Clockwork had the incredibly odd idea that Lil Wayne’s “Hustler Musik” would fit perfectly into the groves of the theme song of The Office.  Sound like sonic craziness right?  Well actually the mashup is very charming.  The profanity spread over the happy piano tinkering is amusing and who at this point is going to complain about getting anything Wayne?

Rhymefest – “Letter”

So we got the Wale version first, then we got a lot of back and forth about why we got the Wale version first.  However, now we have El Che’s contribution to the track.  I think this is my favorite of the two.  Actually, I’m sure it is.

Cassidy – “All the Haze Burnt Up”

No leftovers, ever.  Nuff said.

That’s it for this week folks and of course if you think you have the hottest freestyle in the world, send it over.  We will be sure to let you know if you are right. In honor of the millionth Wu related release coming up next week, we have some free-Tang to close it out today.  Enjoy.
