Don’t be fooled by the title, we’re not calling for Barack’s head or anything. We’re referring to the Honey Dripper’s 1973 song “Impeach The President.” The song was born of frustration from the Vietnam War and everyone’s favorite “non crook” “Tricky Dick” Nixon.
Before Watergate the ‘Drips knew what time it was and this song became the musical foundation of dozens of Hip-Hop tracks beginning with the Audio Two’s “Top Billin” in 1987. Here’s a totally no exhaustive list of some of our favorite tracks featuring the sample. Feel free to add your favorites in the comments section and we’ll add them to the piece.
Audio Two -Top Billin
The best rhyming of “the” and “me” ever in hip hop..lol. Oh, and Milk has a great big body guard. And if you go to jail, he will steal your girl while you are there…even though you are there for MC assault, which is counter intuitive.
Big Daddy Kane -Smooth Operator
Genuine in 89, Kane was at the height of his powers. You gotta go with it just for the video where Kane removes money from the hottest ATM you’ve ever seen. We never saw Rakim do that.
Notorious B.I.G.- Unbelieveable
DJ Premier plays Ginsu knife as he slices and dices and chops the sample almost beyond recognition. Add Biggie’s husky vocals and crystal clear diction and you have an agile hardcore masterpiece.
NWA -Gangsta Gangsta
There is so much irony built into this song it’s not even funny. Nixon didn’t get impeached, he quit. However, it still didn’t quell any damage to the inner cities that the members of NWA could pretend they were living through even though it wasn’t about a salary, it was all about reality. Word to KRS.
EPMD Featuring Redman-Hardcore
Not one of their most popular songs, “Hardcore” is significant as Redman’s entry to the game. The promo video was bananas at the time and led to over a decade of Funkadelic Fury from Red. “Mess with me and get your manhood tooken.” Umm…
Nice & Smooth -Funky For You
Although Dizzy Gillespie was not famous for playing the saxophone, Greg and Smooth were always cranking out fun hits full of melody. They didn’t always make sense, but they did keep your heads nodding. *Does the running man.
Capone N Noreaga –Bloody Money
This album was gritty and gutter and this song was no exception. Capone was up north and N.O.R.E. had to hold it down solo which he certainly did. Marley on the boards kept the sample fluid and Noreaga showed skills he hasn’t really shown since.
MC Lyte-10% Diss
Interesting concept of sampling the break from “Top Billin” that sampled” Impeach the President” and then smothering the jacked beat with a rant about how uncool it is to jack for beats. In its own ironic way, that’s kind of gangsta.
Janet Jackson -That’s the Way Love Goes
This is my favorite Janet Jackson song from my favorite Janet Jackson album. A pre Puff’d J-Lo is in effect in the vid. “Pump her boo, pump her!” That will be all. P.S. WHERE IS JOSIE FROM THE FLY GIRLS???!!!
Soulja Boy Tellem- Yahhh!
Ohhh admit it. It’s infectious. You said it and then you handed everyone in ear shot a disclaimer. Well, there’s no shame in my game. I’ve yahhh-ed a whole buncha tricks in my day. If you haven’t you should try it. YAHHH! TRICK! YAHHHHHH! See how cathartic that was?
*****BONUS******
Mick Jagger –Sweet Thing
I should let the video speak for itself. Yes. I think I will.
LL Cool J- Around The Way Girl (Video Above)
Mr. Smith teaches us the difference between around the way filet and stuck up tuna. Don’t call it a comeback, but call it a definite sonning to homie that got smacked upside his head with his own hat.
