What’s up Planet Ill Reader Family?
While wrapping up this last week of Black History Month of 2010 (but don’t think folks won’t let you know that 28 days is hardly enough to recognize ALL of the accomplishments of people of African descent on any other day of the year), it’s time again to hit the masses with another installment of Indiesent Exposure.
For those who are new to this section, this is the weekly music column where folks drop some FREE quality music downloads & information about quality artists from the Independent Music Community who deserve more exposure and props for keeping their various genres lively & non-cookie cutter status .
Hopefully post by post around here, Planet Ill’s Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some temporary respite from some of the daily audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio and TV airwaves’ definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.
If you like what you hear & download in this section (some of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc. At the end of the day, music artists need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.
To blast off this week’s Indiesent Exposure session, we have 2 free full releases (1 LP and 1 mixtape) representing the Reggae and Hip-Hop angles of the music spectrum are now on deck to start off the weekend…
Please check out everything below from these talented artists and the Planet Ill family know what you think when you get the chance – hope everyone enjoys the selections!
Let’s get into it:
While doing some meandering during a quiet day at the lab, I ran into the music of the band Natty Nation.
The self-described “Hard Roots Rock Reggae” group represents an area most wouldn’t immediate associate with their music – Madison, WI.
Natty Nation since its founding in 1995 has toured & performed on its own as well as performing back up band duties internationally with reggae legends such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, Ziggy, Damian & Stephen Marley, Sister Carol, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Beanie Man & more.
The crew’s music as displayed on the “name your own price” LP (from free to whatever price you want to pay) Reincarnation shows off a nice sonic blend of traditional Dub, Dancehall and Roots Reggae along with a bit of Rock Music influence.
With the tight vocal and instrumental interplay Natty Nation displays, they represent a pretty dope listen when you want to get your Reggae groove on without feeling like you’re hearing the same old vibes all the time or some watered down self-righteous college band in the local bar.
Find out more of what Natty Nation is about with their music, touring, pics and other goodies over at their official website at http://www.NattyNation.com.

Atlanta via Detroit MC & writer Boog Brown has been making a lot of impact in the independent music circles lately on both the performance and recorded end of things.
Since her first mixtape dropped in 2007 with Extended Play, she’s been working heavy in the booth and tour circuit, which lead to her current signing with burgeoning label Mello Music Group (home of Diamond District, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kenn Starr, Dudley Perkins and lots more).
Boog Brown’s latest mixtape, The Grind Season Vol. 1, is a preview for the UPS group project she’s doing with producer Apollo Brown, The Brown Study LP, that’s set to drop this summer.
Her style as an MC kind of reminds me of a mix of Rah Digga or Queen Latifah pre-“Cover Girl” era mixing straight forward street Hip-Hop braggadocio plus the smooth delivery of a Bahamadia. She rides & adapts all of producer Illastrate’s creations really well on this project with both her flow and storytelling skills.
Boog Brown has both the skills and personality to forge a solid career not just in the “she’s all right as a female MC” category, but as an overall dope Hip-Hop talent to look forward to, with more releases & collabos from in the future.
To get more information on what’s happening with Boog Brown’s music and other good things, check out her official MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/BBrownFBGM or her Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/BoogBrown.
