And The Beat Goes On: R. City, J. Cole and C. Breezy For the Free Free

By shelz.

It’s the beginning of the year and retail releases are scant.  On top of that, folks don’t really adhere to release dates anymore.  Between Swiss cheese style calendars and the inevitable push backs, there isn’t much to download to your mp3 player right now.  Unless, of course, you go the mixtape route.  Now those are coming fast and furious these days.  Just talk to Gorilla Zoe who is in the middle of a 28 mixtapes in 28 days tear.  Artists have to make sure you don’t forget who they are in the 1st quarter downtime and I’m not complaining.  Free.99 is always my favorite price. Let’s see who is popping this week.

First we have Chris Brown who dropped In My Zone, his collaboration with Don Cannon on Valentines Day.  Ironic? Yes.  Timely? That is another story.  I would think he would be out and about promoting his album, but maybe that project has already been scrapped.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a bad heap of reviews, but that’s neither here nor there.  Breezy decided to put his stamp on Trey Songz “Invented Sex” with his own special extra nasty twist. He uses his tongue because he’s the cookie monster.  Figure it out yet?

Next is Cassidy and Jag over Rhi Rhi’s “Rude Boy.”  I guess the pair took the chorus as a personal affront or maybe a challenge.  The boys don’t believe in innuendo so don’t let your kids listen to this.  If you are a kid, Momma Shelz says, “Don’t click play.”  The boys took the lazy route on this one though as there is still way more Rihanna on here than Cass and Jag added together. Alright grown folks, let it rip.

Moving on we have J. Cole making use of Kanye’s track “Go!”  off  Common’s Be.  Its Cole! instead of Go! now as J. continues to “Knock On Wood” as his star rises. He tackles the naysayers and his issues with his woman.  He talks about leaner days, people thinking he isn’t from the south, and even gives a little shine to Tiger Woods and his lady problems.  The lyrics are a bit all over the place, but Mr. Cole still manages to deliver them nicely.

Don Cannon is back with Rock City and their Empire Strikes Back mixtape and the pair jacks Jigga for “Run This Town.”  They decided to cut Rihanna out of the hook which may make some of you happy.  Dude picking up the singer role handles it well and the pair covers everything from haters to work ethic to the carnal subject of the week. It’s all good until dude says his name is Toilet Bowl Jones because he’s s**tting on n***as.  Ewwww.

Last, but not least (well, that’s really for you to decide) T-Pain and some of his Nappy All-Stars decide to declare the “Forever” track theirs for a day.  T-Pain unceremoniously removes Drake from the hook and takes his place.  He asks for the person behind the boards to take the auto-tune off and goes in. He also makes it very obvious why he switched from rapper to singer and why he should never switch back.  There are some other people on here, including one guy who reminds me of Plies.  Sigh…

Well that’s going to be it for our weekly look at sonic robbery free.99 style.  Hopefully, the files from the cutting room floor can keep you entertained until something, anything drops.  Until next time folks, I wish you love, peace and soul.  Word to Don Cornelius.
