As rappers like Jeezy can attest, sometimes it isn’t what you say or at times not even how you say it, but what you emote. That fire in the belly has propelled many rappers over the years into that rare air that moves listeners emotionally, not with content, but conviction.

Donny Goines has been the little rapper that could, fighting to be commercially viable without losing creativity or lyrics in a disposable environment. His albums have been generally concept albums that reach his listeners from different approaches, but he’s not really broken through to that well known status. He, like many of his brethren stand on the outside looking in, amazed that seemingly lesser talents are getting all the press.

Well Donny sounds pissed and his newest track “No Apologies” has him going full bore over an organ fueled chaotic track similar in spirit and construction to Jay-Z’s classic “You Don’t Know” and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard Mr. Goines spit with such fury. It looks good on him. There is no allegory, no attempt to be cute; the beat is raw and Goines has no choice but to go hard or go home and it sounds like he can’t find his keys. There’s  anger and determination here and aggression, complete with machismo and profanity, that pushes this past Goines’ previous range.

Most of the new class of rapper is either wacka flaming trash, or a bit metrosexual; not that that makes them bad people or unsalable as artists. They have their fan bases and much power to them serving what their fiends are buying, but if you’re looking for some no nonsense bodybag action, look no further than “No Apologies.” Enjoy.
