What’s up Planet Ill readers, supporters and other categories during this 2nd full week into 2010 – hope the week’s been going well eveyone so far!
It’s now time for another session of Indiesent Exposure, the weekly section here at Planet Ill where folks drop some quality music downloads & info from quality independent music artists all types of different genres (Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, etc.) who deserve more exposure and props for keeping their various genres lively & non-cookie cutter status.
Hopefully post by post here on Planet Ill, Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some temporary respite from some of the audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses each day via the mainstream radio and TV airwaves.
If you like what you hear in this section (some joints of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.
At the end of the day, music artists needs to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.
In recognition of the and the terrible tragedy that is going on so far from the Haiti Earthquakes aftermath and passing of music legend Teddy Pendergrass (R.I.P.), this week’s Indiesent Exposure, we have to give respect to those indie music artists who are keeping Soul Music & it’s foundations alive by either continuing tradition or creating other forms of dope music from that base.
Music is a universal language that regardless of cultural, ethic or social barriers, we can all identify with. Music of high quality always conveys strong emotions, feelings and inspiration. We all need to have it to express ourselves in ways that the mere reciting of words cannot take us.
R&B & Soul Music has always had that effect. Even in the mainstream radio era times where the art form seems to be going the way of emotionless babbling , there are still great R&B & Soul Music artists from all over that cover lots of subjects and are aware of a bigger world than one’s self.
Please check out everything below from these talented artists and the Planet Ill family know what you think when you get the chance – hope everyone enjoys the selections!
Let’s get into it:
Raheem DeVaughn – Mr. February aka March Madness (Download)
Maryland representative Raheem DeVaughn has been on a tear lately not just through his own high powered Soul Music album releases via the major label circuit (The Love Experience is SO slept on, but Love Behind The Melody really got him out there), but with his own indie label, 368 Music Group.
Besides grabbing up solid local talent in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virigina) area and helping push them to the national level (side note: Phil Ade – one of our Indiesent Exposure Top Hip-Hop Artists 100 of 2009 is really NEXT), Raheem has been putting out a lot his own of original music and releases via the 368 Music Group.
While working on the upcoming The Love And War MasterPeace album (scheduled to drop March 2, 2010), Raheem has been putting out a huge body of work with remixes and original joints via the mixtape circut, with the latest being Mr. February aka March Madness.
Offered for free through the official 368 Music Group Bandcamp website along with all of his past mixtape releases, each track definitely has his unique imprint of both old & new school Soul Music influences (cats from Donny Hathaway to Babyface) with an around the way brother vibe that makes everything gel nicely, from the Go-Go Music grooves of the “Pretty Girls RMX” to the cover of Frankie Beverly & Maze’s “We Are One”.
Get more info on what’s going on with Raheem DeVaughn and the entire 368 Music Group family with interviews, video, music releases, shows and more over at http://www.368MusicGroup.com.

BamaLoveSoul.com Presents Keep RIZEing to the Top: A Selection of Unreleased Dwele Songs (Download)
Props to the crew over at the BamaLoveSoul.com website for being able to get all of these tracks from Detriot, Michigan’s own Dwele for the BamaLoveSoul.com Presents Keep RIZEing to the Top: A Selection of Unreleased Dwele Songs compilation.
The songs on here represent a lot of solid cuts since the beginning his career with 1998’s independently released Rize LP and his collabos with Slum Village to his time over at Virgin Records and current situation with RT Records/Koch.
These rather excellent Soul Music joints that didn’t drop on any of Dwele’s official albums throughout the past decade plus for various reasons – Industry Rule #4080 stuff, just not making the final versions of releases, being one-off single projects and so forth.
They all have good production that highlight his natural mellow & smooth voice, riding confidently through whatever the song topic is throughout the time it’s in folks’ ears.

URB ALT Sampler (Download)
Like the family over at BoldAsLove and AfroPunk, the folks over at URB ALT (shouts to the Muthawit crew for putting in great work over there) are a dope resource of finding out what’s happening with the international Black Rock/Black Alternative music scene.
They recently just dropped this compilation of acts where inside the music ranges in eclectic genre influences like Funk, Soul, Metal and Electronica with a lot of interesting experimentation joints in between.
None of the music is TOO far out there on some artsy-fartsy stuff (you can at least head nod or dance to mostly everything on here) and is a pretty nice set of audio goodness, especially for FREE.
All of the acts have their websites on the cover of the URB ALT sampler, so if you like any of the acts, reach out to them with some kind words, see what other projects they have out and whatever’s good you can to support!

Turntable Science – Extended Techniques, Vol. 01 (Download)
To wrap it up, we have the Romania’s Turntable Science collective, a turntablist crew consisting of members DJ Dox, DJ Undoo, DJ FaiboX and DJ Paul.
Since their formation in 2004, they have performed throughout the European Union and have opened for fellow dope DJs, turnablists and Hip-Hop crews like Grand Wizzard Theodore, DJ Vadim, DJ Koala, various crews of the Wu-Tang Killa Beez and others.
They’ve offered their first official album, Turntable Science – Extended Techniques, Vol. 01 , over at Bandcamp on a name your price basis, you can pay Free.99 (aka nothing) to whatever your choice is.
I’m digging Turntable Science because unlike some breeds of turntablists where it’s more or less a “let me show y’all how many different scratches I can get done in 5 minutes to NO rhythm”, they creatively link up a lot of cohesive samples to make some dope sonic grooves, mostly on the downtempo and Hip-Hop style ends.
In a way, they remind me of crews like The X-Ecutioners or World Famous Beat Junkies where the turntables are truly used as instruments to make a whole other soulful sound landscape one might not expect form a few pieces of vinyl & cold steel.
Find out more about what’s going on with the Turntable Science crew’s latest projects, tours and other things over at their official website at http://www.TurntableScience.com.
