Haiti has paid the price of freedom for centuries. It seems that both government, global society , and Earth itself conspire to exact that cost. Recently we covered their attempt at changing their destiny with self determination, but there are some things that can’t be overcome without the help of others. Yesterday, Haiti was hit with an enormous earthquake which devastated its capital city of Port Au Prince. Since the initial wave they have been continuously battered by continual aftershocks that have persisted until this morning.
We’re not going to terrorize you with pictures, I’m sure you’ve been on all the news outlets today. But we will give you a few words from humanitarian Wyclef Jean and leave you with a wide array of ways that you can contribute. This isn’t Facebook where you can tell people your bra is pink or Twitter where you can make your avatar green, and give moral support.
Haiti needs money, clothes, and actual support. In America, we take pride in being a leader and in our general lives, while we may have our ups and downs, it is highly unlikely that you are facing a lack of shelter, a lack of drinkable water, and food. Give. Even if it’s five dollars. Give. Because that price you pay for a cab instead of walking or taking the train can go much further in the third world. Give because it is humane and because survival is higher on the scale of necessity than leisure. Anyway. Out with the guilt trip, in with the ‘Clef. Give. Because our brothers and sisters need it. Our human brothers and sisters. Peace
