We got a lot of words here at The Planet. Tons of them. It’s not easy to consistently write this volume. And in the middle of life, love, and feeding your own family, having the devotion to regularly contribute to a rising enterprise is something to be lauded and commended. We have tragedies and things in our lives that occasionally take precedent over something that doesn’t feed your family (yet).
With that in mind, before we begin, I’d like to thank all of my writers at Planet Ill. 2009 was a very…strange year, and their selfless commitment to our common goal is something that I can never hope to repay. Chief among them is my pride and joy shelz, who has at times carried this site on her shoulders whenever we needed it. I have guided and watched her pen improve in the short time we have been together and I am not only astonished at her growth, I am humbled by her devotion.
She doesn’t get to let loose as much as she used to, because she is more than an editorial writer, but read what she has to say. Whether you agree and give her dap or disagree and think she should be slapped, you will feel something. And in this sorry state of Hip-Hop writing, that is the rarest of abilities. Thank you, shelz, and I look forward to pushing you higher. Special shout to Malice Intended who, as of late, has begun to accept the cross and bear the weight of brilliance. He has really begun to hone his craft and deliver consistent excellence and it is recognized. Now onto the show. I’ll cut the comments short and list what we did this week so you can get to the music.
Monday 12/7/2009
We opened with the review of Eminem’s Relapse: Refill. He kinda shat on the fans by making them buy his album all over again but the music was good if disturbing. From there we gave you live footage of Nigerian sensation Nneka in concert and introduced her new video. We blew the lid off with The Raw Truth about Soundscan and the fallacy of the whole “men lie…” statement.
Tuesday 12/8/2009
We reviewed NO legend B.G.’s Too Hood To Be Hollywood and brought back He Say/She Say to help a reader with a mooching ass family.
Wednesday 12/9/2009
Wednesday was a busy day as we reviewed Alicia Keys-The Element Of Freedom , introduced our newest column You Wild by the homie A Negro With A Keyboard who went in on Toni Braxton’s curious kiss, and marked the returns of icon Sade and Jagged Edge with Planet Ill Breakdowns.
Thursday 12/10/2009
We reviewed Robin Thicke’s new release Sex Therapy, gave you an audio fix with the week’s Fuseboxradio Podcast, and The Rowdy One hit you with the week in sports and the NFL Week 14 picks.
Friday 12/11/2009
We reviewed Timbaland’s Shock Value 2, gave you the low down on the JMJ documentary Two Turntables And A Microphone, and hit you with your weekly dose of DJ Fusion’s Indiesent Exposure.
Saturday 12/12/2009
Saturday, Malice Intended blessed us with a review of the surprisingly good Nicholas Cage movie Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans, and some South Bronx history with the documentary Flyin’ Cut Sleeves
That’s the week in review citizens. And now, on to the music.
Belly Feat. Drake – “Make It Go” Belly ft. Drake – Make It Go (Clean)
This slow-burner is actually pretty dope if you can ignore some of the corney lyrics from the second verse. Typical you man can’t and I can , let me wife you joint, but the beat is well done, the melody is strong and it’s well executed.
Jamie Foxx Feat. Justin Timberlake- “Winner” Jamie Foxx ft. Justin Timberlake – Winner – MP3WAXX
Foxx is back on the mic and he’s brought your favorite wardrobe malfunction causer with him. Song is full of hubris but it’s a thunping beat and the return of both artists to music is enough to give it some gravity. The clubs will rock, the gods of music will probably not be moved, but asses will be. More rapped than actually sang but solid.
KRS-1 & Buckshot Feat Talib Kewli “Oh Really RMX” OhReallyRMXftTalibKweli_GeoofBlueScholars
The blastmaster is at his aggressive best here, manhandling this beat like Mr. Magic was still giving him the cold shoulder. Buckshot sounds refreshed and as ill as he ever has. Hardcore Hip-Hop at its best.
Eternia- “Foul Child” Eternia – Foul Child (Prod. By Ant B)
Femcee Eternia goes with a boom-bap approach on this one as she relays her story to the masses. Don’t know it it’s autobiographic or not, but it’s cool. Her clothes are on, and she’s not trying to be a guy, so kudos to her on this. Solid.
God-Des & She “Get Your Bike” God-Des_And_She-Get_Your_Bike
A bit off kilter and whimsical in construction , this song is mos def a change of pace and a bit to the alternative side. The lyrics recall the good old days of youth and the celebration of the good times. Hit or miss depending on your tastes, but it is certainly different.
Jim Jones Feat. Rev Run- “Wishing On A Sucker MC” Wishing On A Sucker MC _Dirty_
Jim Jones reminisces on the Dipset days sounding a bit remorseful that it’s no longer all so simple. Good performance for him but he’s blown away by icon Run. Sounding every bit as fresh as 84, the good reverend is sharper than he was on the “Let’s Get Married” remix a few years back. The beat is easy almost a mixtape blend mainly constructed of the classic “Sucker MC’s” beat. A win.
And that’s it for this Sick Sunday. Be sure to follow us on Twitter @ http://twitter.com/planetill and register with the site. Stay tuned for our year end, coming soon. Peace.
