Planet Ill Breakdown:Drop The World

Rebirth still might happen, huh? It’s not like an album hanging in label limbo is anything new.  How long did it take Maino to come after “Hi Hater” became the radio spin friendly anthem of a couple of summers ago?  “Prom Queen” has come and gone, taking its mixed bag of reviews with it.  However, the latest possible edition of Wayne’s ode to sex, drugs and Rock & Roll is upon us and this time he brought a friend.

Lil Waye Feat. Eminem-“Drop The World”  Lil_Wayne-Drop_The_World__Feat_Eminem_

Weezy F. Baby takes the lead on this menacing track and Mr. Mathers does a hell of a job playing clean up. So as Wayne and his faithful flock continue to scream he’s the best rapper aliiiiiiive, the rest of us are wondering how that’s the case if he keeps getting bodied by the folks sharing tracks with him. I mean its easy to act like Corey Gunz didn’t happen, but Eminem is a whole ‘nother story.  Of course, its just speculation at this point to suggest this song will be on Rebirth, but Wayne and Baby and ‘nem would be crazy to let a little ego get in the way of making sure this makes the cut.

First of all it’s nice to know Wayne isn’t totally stepping off the rap path.  “Drop the World” is a pretty decent attempt at rock/rap fusion as opposed to putting his inner emcee on hiatus.  Even the track is an interesting combination of the pair of sounds.  A slow driving bass line with an overwhelmingly sinister synth that weaves back and forth from a  digital simple Simon sound to dark, full and convoluted. There’s also a synthesized guitar piece in there which finishes of the rock-esque feel of the song.

Now suggesting that you can pick the world up and drop it on someone’s head does sound like something a small kid would say, but a well- placed expletive solves that problem, I guess.  Wayne’s verses are dark and prideful.  He suggests that his life is full of the worst that the world can offer which has in turn made him strong; stronger than you as a matter of fact.  This pain-induced strength has given him knowledge and power that you don’t have access to and that’s why he’s more accomplished and just generally better than you.  He’s not above murder, bribery and extortion because those are the things that make the world turn.  He knows that.  You don’t.  That’s why he’s smarter than you too. However, all of this hubris and knowledge can’t keep him from getting out done both lyrically and delivery wise by his partner in crime.

We know Eminem has a style for everyday of the year.  He speeds it up, slows it down and normally keeps the delivery off balance enough to keep you on your toes.  Considering it’s the dark side of the Hip-Hop moon where Eminem resides these days, of course he would find this song especially comfortable.  The metaphors come furiously and Eminem rides the slow track perfectly as he explains the how the chill of the game has affected him in the most negative of ways. However, it’s all he knows.  He perseveres even though he knows he’s already left his mark. Again we have lots of conceit, but if anyone is entitled it’s him.

So there you have it.  Two emcees who regularly make people’s top how-many-ever lists putting it down at different artistic levels, but still drawing the theme together enough that its smooth, cohesive and at times a bit startling.  It’s not everyone’s sound but the friends of fusion should enjoy it.  Only thing is, this song makes me a bit more curious about Relapse 2 then Rebirth.  Sorry Wayne.

  1. Good write up….still wondering why Rebirth continues to get oushed on us when its very clear that no one wants it. Smh…I effs with Weezy, but I’m not moshing with him…lol

  2. This actually can be a good look since they contrast each other so greatly. It’s crazy how lil wayne can probably be on a track with ne one. #noceilings!

  3. Both Wayne and Em are mcees worth your attention and respect. I like the fusion that this song is trying to portray. i appreciate it when artist challenge themselves outside of the comfortable to try and create new waves to ride. The content is relevant and i think they both do a superb job at what they already do best which is releasing fire-power with the words they spit. But i agree that Em did smash it a bit harder than Wayne did.
