What’s up Planet Ill readers, supporters, biters, and others during this 2nd week of December 2009 – hope the week’s been going well so far!
While dealing with a week of winter making its appearance in spades (20 degree mornings in the DC Metro…hmph), MORE news of “Tiger Woods & his Hos”, U.S. President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech and hope for all who love Soul Music with the latest track by Sade (February 2010 it BETTER be in the Billboard Top 5), it’s time for another session of Indiesent Exposure.
This is the section where on Planet Ill, folks drop weekly music downloads of various quality independent music artists who deserve more exposure, props, and credit for keeping their various genres alive & original.
Pretty much every music genre gets covered in this section at one time or another – Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, etc. – to keep the audio goodies diverse & lively.
Post by post, this section will give your ears temporary respite from some of the audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses each day via the mainstream radio and TV airwaves.
If you like what you hear in this section (some of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows. At the end of the day, music artists needs to eat like everyone else forthe work they do and the joy they bring.
This week, Indiesent Exposure’s focus is on producers (3 dope ones to be exact) – who if they weren’t behind the boards, music would be strictly spoken word or acapella singing all day…
Check out everything below from these talented artists and let us over here Planet Ill know what you think when you get the chance – hope everyone enjoys the selections!
Let’s get into it:
King Britt – Kingstrumentals LP (download)
Philadelphia DJ, producer and remixer King Britt has a VERY long history in the music world.
Whether from his House Music beginnings with Strictly Rhythm Records (and later founding Ovum Recordings with Josh Wink), producing for Digable Planets (as Silkworm) or his literal hundreds of Soul, Hip-Hop And House remixes for people as diverse as Wendy & Lisa, Hezekiah, Santigold, Tori Amos, Ursula Rucker and Macy Gray, King Britt’s musical impact has been felt all over the world.
Though his company and label, FiveSixMedia, besides promoting himself and fellow artists on the label, King Britt drops some free downloads of various projects he’s worked on, including the dope Kingstrumentals series I decided to share with the Indiesent Exposure crew, where from his own words:
I felt like I needed to go back to the essence of making beats. So I dusted off the MPC2000 and grabbed stacks of wax from my library to make beats. It was such a wonderful feeling to just flip beats again. Wasn’t even thinking of releasing them, just an exercise for my brain.
The fun part was that I only used the floppy drive. Only 12sec of sample time for each joint.
All kicks, snares and sounds are all from records. Mixed raw, right out of the MPC stereo outs. Done in 1 week in April 2009 (one or two oldies thrown in for good measure)
The beats are untitled, so in the player, I just posted up one of my favorite instrumentals from the collection as an example for folks to check out a bit of Britt’s soulful vibe and things plenty of folks should be able to groove to.

The Last Poets feat. Keith Murray – Dakari (Nicolay RMX) (download)
Soul & Hip-Hop music producer Nicolay has been probably one of the top 10 great stories of independent music and the internet meeting up to make great music and business.
From his connecting with rapper/singer Phonte of Little Brother to form the group Foreign Exchange via the OkayPlayer message board (congrats on the Grammy nomination!) to his solo work with various artists, the Dutch producer has been getting it in heavy the past few years with a lot of solid musical input (especially with the City Lights 1.5 & City Lights 2 albums).
I was going through Nicolay’s website earlier this week and was put onto this fly remix of the legendary Spoken Word group Last Poets’ track that never came out (some Industry Rule #4080 stuff on not getting paid via some channels) featuring Keith Murray, which has a nice audio impact with the laid back & mellow groove that forms from the interplay of the organ riffs, drums, bells and vocals.

DJ Bless feat. Jim Snooka – Help (download)
Queen, NY/South Carolina representative DJ Bless has been creating music as a producer, writer, and an artist for both movie scores and numerous independent & mainstream artists (including Keith Murray, the Outlawz, Mystikal, Wordsmith, Louis the 13th and more) for over the past decade.
As the CEO & founder of Never So Deep Records (NSD) label, he has put out a consistent & solid slate of both Hip-Hop and Rock music releases that have been very successful worldwide with both the feedback and sales ends.
On the Hip-Hop end, to grab a direct quote from DJ Bless, the production is to do it’s best to update and “bring back the Boom-Bap by any means necessary.”
This cool Indiesent Exposure track (coming from his next untitled album in 2010) definitely fits that audio aesthetic with some heavy metal guitar rolling over the drumbeat and South Carolina MC Jim Snooka’s rhymes literally providing sanity & survival to the lives of the people he’s narrating.
