What’s Good to the folks over here at Planet Ill!
To give folks the extremely quick intro, my name is DJ Fusion and I’m the creator, mix DJ & host of the weekly radio show syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast and BlackRadioIsBack.com.
I do actually spin (2 turntables, a mic, some CD players & whatnot), been professionally rocking it out since 1998, literally have a room in my spot just full of records, CDs and hard drives of joints and care deeply about the music that’s put out there to the people (sometimes maybe more than I should according to some of my peoples).
The bro Odeisel gave me the honor and pleasure of doing a weekly writeup and download piece here on the site to give some exposure to quality artists doing their thing independent music circuit a.k.a. give a bit of some Indiesent Exposure to the masses.
Pretty much every music genre is going to be covered in this section – Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, etc.- to keep it a bit lively. Hopefully, we’ll give your ears a temporary break from some of the audio wackness and/or iCoonery that seems to bombard folks each day via the radio and TV airwaves.
If you like what you hear (some of which will hopefully be new to folks), support the artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to shows, etc.
End of the day, they need to eat like everyone else for putting in their work somewhere down the line.
Anyway, here goes – hope y’all enjoy:
J. Period & K’Naan – Let’s Start (Messengers RMX) (Download)
In an age where remix projects seem a dime a dozen now (I’m just waiting to be bombarded by 9,999,999 “Blueprint 3” remix albums & songs with an MC’s newly added 16 Bars the second the inevitable Jay-Z a cappellas drop/leak/are conjured by electronic magic via ProTools), it’s nice to run into a creative project like this one done by producer/DJ J. Period & indie Hip-Hop MC on the rise K’Naan.
This track is my personal favorite from the J.Period & K’Naan – The Messengers (Episode 1: Fela Kuti) mixtape project that’s out now which remixes the work of music pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, creator of the AfroBeat music genre.
Cop the full project for free if you dig it here.
Brittany Bosco – 8 Track (Download)
In the flush of e-mails I get on the daily, hearing that so and so is the “bestest singer in the entire world” has the effect of Percocet – mad numbing as all hell.
When singing for ladies sometimes seems to be a mix of Janet Jackson-esque cooing (which until lately, she’s been able to do pretty damned well) + Autotune + posing everywhere 85.3% naked to the point folks are like “meh” when you do something new make you a disposable diva in the 21st century, running into folks who actually have it going on is a fresh breath of air.
Brittany Bosco’s singing style is a mix of jazz, R&B & funk influences and the track I chose has a nice live feel to it and medium tempo groove to actually see how folks put the song together without a lot of extra mess and to display some real talent. Check out more on her at http://www.myspace.com/brittanybosco.
Roy Davis Jr. feat. Manny – Hold U (Download)
Since singing and rhyming over various House Music beats is making folks hits (Pitbull, I’m looking at you, hope Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez & the Bucketheads got paid) almost like it’s the late 1980s/early 1990s again, it’s only right to hit up folks with a track from the new project from Chicago House Music legend Roy Davis Jr. from his latest project, God Life Music.
This track has kind of has a nice lounge vibe to it for folks to mellow out to with some pretty decent singing from the chosen vocalist Manny (who I have no idea who this fellow is, but he rocks it out). Check out more on Roy Davis Jr. at http://www.myspace.com/theofficialroydavisjr.
Phil Ade – Going Off (Download)
This young Hip-Hop MC is signed under extremely underrated Soul Music singer Raheem DeVaughn’s (Jive Records did the super FAIL with promoting The Love Experience LP in my opinion) independent label, 368 Music Group.
Nice old school vibe with the beat and his flow is ridiculous (besides the fact his live show is actually worth something – and that’s sans histrionics, 50+ hype men on the stage, etc.).
Why in the hell was this young man NOT listed in these “Leaders of the New School” lists of 2009 (we see how successful THAT can turn out to be :-/ ) I have no idea.
His mixtape project Starting on JV is the business and along with videos, etc. can be check out at http://www.myspace.com/philade301.
Nickodemus feat. Ismael Kouyate – N’Dini (Download)
The “Sun People” album I got this from (after sleeping on it for a minute, my fault) has Giant Step’s “Turntables on the Hudson” DJ, remixer & producer Nickodemus flipping some international music vibes by having a nice House Music/AfroBeat combo of a song with vocalist Ismael Kouyate.
I’ve checked out live music sets by this dude and he really gets it in. Check out more of his work & DJ sets at http://www.myspace.com/nickodemusnyc.
