You ever wonder how rappers that suck seem to drop albums every year, but (with the exception of Jay-z, TI, and Tupac) those with good music are always making you wait years for new product? It’s one of the annoying foils of being a Hip-Hop fan, but as they say, abscence makes the heart grow fonder. We were recently treated to a new opus from the mighty Mos Def, and now Black by popular demand, the revolutionary but gangsta artists dead prez are dropping some new fire.
This time, accompanied by versatile DJ/Producer Green Lantern, the duo return from an extended hiatus with the 14-track work entitled Pulse Of The People. The album finds a maturing dead prez experimenting with melody, infused with a subtly heightened sense of humor, yet still possessing that “Let’s Get Free” attitude. The middle fingers to the police are still there, but also present is a more seasoned musicality and it’s reflected in their music.
Last night, they performed the bulk of the album for an intense, but rainsoaked crowd at NYC’s Highline Ballroom. Enough talk, here are the pics and the vids. Support real music. Shout to special guest Immortal Technique, an artist similar in spirit and hunger to dead prez. Artists like these put deeds and money and action where their mouths are because talk is cheap. Albums aren’t cheap, but they are cheap enough to support, so again keep the music alive and whether you agree with their political views, you can’t argue with the passion , execution and delivery of their music.
