Just rewatched Man On Fire for the umpteenth time. Probably the only revenge flick ever made that got away with nearly an hour of non-action to set up the motivation. Nowadays if a movie trailer shows a gunshot people start bitching the second the promised gunshots aren't in the opening minute so it's actually amazing nobody ever gave the movie shit for it.

The slow burn is part of the charm of Man On Fire and how inventive a lot of the framing for such monotonous build up made it seem fresh again. You really got involved with Denzel and the little girl. It felt more organic than the original movie and made the eventual pay off all the more powerful.

That one and Crimson Tide were his best with Denzel. Unstoppable? please. I was interested in The Warriors remake though. Tony Scott and his hyper acidic style unleashed in LA with fictional and real gangs hunting for a specific gang no matter what sounded like the type of chaos I would've enjoyed. Could've done without Top Gun 2 since the original was garbage but even more so now than ever the vampires in hollywood would want to go forward with it out of "re$pect for his vision".

I always thought Man On Fire was the last time both Scott and Denzel put real commitment into their work. There's so much going on with Denzel's acting in that movie, you feel Scott's giving him a lot of freedom yet Denzel doesn't half-ass it but gives it all he's got, like he's rewarding Scott for handing him that freedom. It's such a relaxed but at the same time deep performance that it still amazes me after all these years.

There really is a lot going on. The change of status for the character sending him to rock bottom, then gaining so much, then losing it as soon as he had it - and he did it all so fucking well. I have seriously spent many nights shitfaced watching that movie as a sort of catharsis.
