Well, not necessarily their 'best' but rappers whose highest acclaimed albums aren't their best. I often see this with debut albums, where a rapper always gets acclaim for his first release despite his discography containing far better albums. Take Nas for example, everybody praises Illmatic but I know some cats think It Was Written is a better album.
I had the same thought the other day while I was listening to Das EFX. These guys are mostly known and praised for their debut Dead Serious (and if you look on sites like www.rateyourmusic.com, it holds the highest score in their discography), but I was listening to Straight Up Sewaside and I can barely describe how much better it was to me. I mean, Dead Serious is classic but the whole album relies a lot (perhaps even a bit too much) on their iggedy style whereas their lyrical efforts on SUS are a lot wittier and their punchlines more clever and the album as a whole is just far greater.
Anyone else feel the same way about an artist (it doesn't have to be a rapper) and for the record, I don't mean albums you find more entertaining or prefer, but albums you really feel are better than their highest praised work.
