To discuss all things One Piece, lol. I'm currently on the Sky Island/God Enel arc or whatever it's commonly referred to as. Either way, it's I'm still enjoying it a lot although I do wonder if there will be a lot changed once they return to the 'Blue Sea' with them being gone for quite a bit.
Danbo

That part of the story is referred to as the Skypiea arc. What kind of things are you expecting to be changed when they return to sea?
Dr Doom
02-20-2011, 09:59 PM
Well, for one I'm wondering if people will have thought they have died, and if so if Blackbeard will take claim for their deaths so he can become one of the seven Pirate Lords. Which of course would also mean that for a bit they have more general free movement because everybody's stopped looking for them. And I wonder if we get to know if one guy whose name I can't remember (the one with the two ape pals) finds the treasure of gold he was looking for.

Still on the Skypiea arc but I was just wondering what everybody's favorite characters are, both in Luffy's crew and otherwise.

My favourite good guys are
Luffy
Chopper
Trafalgar Law
The Veggie Pirates
Laboon
Garp
Shanks
Favourite characters that are even more eviler than Skeletor are
Crocodile
Blackbeard
Akainu

I think my favorites of the Straw Hat crew are Chopper and Zoro, both for different reasons of course. I also dig Shanks of what I've seen of him so far. My favorite bad guys are Crocodile (best villain so far) and Buggy (GOAT voice, lmao).
Danbo

I can't recall when One Piece got interesting to me... But I WILL say that the Arabasta Arc as a whole is one of the best pieces of comic related fiction I've ever read/watched.
Not saying it's top 5, maybe skating around the fringes of top 10 though.
And it didn't hit me til the Water 7 arc just how attached to these characters I actually was.

I hear so much about this Water 7 arc. I have no choice other than to stick it out then.
Dr Doom

The Arabasta Arc has definitely been the best story arc so far (but I haven't gotten to the Water 7 Arc yet). Its build-up is sheer perfection, it starts so simple with getting Vivi to Arabasta but once they get there it just slowly developed into this massive war and epic fights and everybody was getting beaten the living crap out of them and shit.

Water 7 wasn't all that to me... There were certain parts, though. Let's just say you're gonna know if you're a fan by the time you finish with that one. lol
but it's more of a "Calm Before the Storm" type arc, honestly. Wow. I haven't watched One Piece in a minute....

Cool. Back when I had a subscription to Shonen Jump and occasionally glanced at One Piece trying to find out what all the hype was about, that chapter where Zoro got his ass kicked by Mihawk stood out to me. I should be pretty close to that point in the story then.
Danbo

Those "certain parts" make up for any other shortcomings of the arc though. Two of the very best One Piece moments during Water 7.

Hmm...interesting. I still find it funny that OP was only supposed to last about 5 years or so but here it is after over a decade still going strong
Dr Doom
03-31-2011, 07:56 PM
Finished the Skypiea arc. After the Montblanc Norland flashback episodes I thought it was never going to end, lol. The thing that surprises me the most about OP is how incredibly well plotted it is. Like from the beginning to the end of the arc it's so well put together, unexplained stuff that was mentioned or happened like 50 episodes back still matters and is brought back and it just fits together like a million piece jigsaw puzzle. I'm just saying, there's a shitload of manga/comic/tv-show writers who should be ashamed of themselves for not being able to plot their stories out so far in advance and not mess it up.
Anyway, nobody died again but I guess that's just something I'm going to have to accept from this show, death isn't happening unless you're a character who's already dead at present time and only appear in flashbacks, lol. Enel got schooled and apparently now rides his arc to the moon? Most interesting turn is Gol D. Roger's interest in the Polyglyphs, is it safe to say with its constant hinting at massive weapons of total destruction that they're going to dictate huge parts of the story later on? Furthermore I was shocked to find out that Luffy is voiced by a woman in her 50s. The only thing more shocking than that is that I can now actually hear it in his voice, the energetic croaking of an ADD pirate actually being the croaking of an old lady.
One thing, should I watch the filler episodes that are coming next or just skip straight to the next manga arc? I kinda want to watch the filler since one upcoming episode (199) is directed by Mamoru Hosoda, which is obviously a huge deal to me.
Danbo
03-31-2011, 08:10 PM
first off, how DARE you call Tanaka Mayumi an old lady. She's so unbelievably awesome and is the one and only person who could ever voice Luffy!
Did you like Luffy's brain tactic? lol. He finishes fights in such cool ways, Enel and Arlong got pwned in such epic fashion. I agree, the story is very well written, it's the main thing which seperates OP from its lacking rivals Naruto and Bleach. With OP to continue for another 10 years yet Oda saying he still plans to use the ending he wrote in the beginning, you can tell he doesn't just write the story as he goes along which prevents everything turning into mush.
I'm not sure exactly what filler arc is next, but I watched them all and most of them were atleast entertaining despite being pointless to the plot. I'd say you should watch the fillers just so you don't miss out on the epicness of AFRO LUFFY!
Dr Doom
03-31-2011, 08:21 PM
She is an old lady. No disrespect because I agree that voicing Luffy makes her totally awesome and that it's impossible to ever imagine anyone else as his voice. Luffy's tactic wasn't that different from usual, just storm in and pound away, but ramming Enel into the bell was definitely a nice touch. I guess I'll watch the filler then.
Danbo
03-31-2011, 08:28 PM
The good thing about action in OP is that even with the "storm in and pound away" method, Luffy uses so many different types of attacks it keeps everything fresh. If you include the movies, Luffy has used so many different techniques, it's cool to see what he comes up with next.
Dr Doom
03-31-2011, 08:37 PM
I agree about that, one of the things that turned me off on Fairy Tail was that Natsu only has like three fucking attacks. Oda actually keeps coming up with new ways to make the fights feel fresh no matter who's fighting who.
Danbo
03-31-2011, 08:40 PM
Indeed. Naruto is the same as FT aswell, Naruto uses the same few techniques all the time.

I read up to chapter 70 of One Piece yesterday...
It's okay, but like I remember Doom said what made things more interesting was Mihawk dropping on the scene and giving everybody a dose of what lies on the Grand Line. Stuff like Deep Blue and Mihawk add a very necessary dose of intrigue to the story.
So far, I still hold the same stance on its quality in relation to Naruto. OP is more orderly and has better pacing and storytelling than Naruto, but nothing super-extraordinary jumps out about it yet. And the female characters get more development. But, I read from someone on MAL (bad source, I know) that at first OP wasn't even that popular and was pretty bland, but after a certain point it became huge and bore no semblance to the typical shounen. So I'll keep reading and see.
One more thing. Although in general I prefer fan-scanlations, I must admit that official publications do add something to the text, even if it's not always good. The scanlation I read of Mihawk vs. Zoro had Mihawk saying:
"I am not a stupid person to use all of what I have to hunt a rabbit"
But in the Shonen Jump issue I read a long time ago, the same line was rendered something like this:
"I am not the type of fool that hunts rabbits with cannons"
It packs a little more punch, imo. But there's always bad examples-- like what they did with the official Naruto translations...ugh.
Anyways, I should be caught up to speed by the end of next week.

I guess that will involve Robin? I'm now at the part where the CP9 members have revealed themselves (I only suspected the secretary chick) and Robin says her goodbyes to the crew. Although it seems something more is going on so that can go either way, especially since this whole arc seems more heavy on plot twists than usual. There's also the case of missing Sanji and Usopp being kidnapped by Franky. Hrmm...

Finished the Enies Lobby Arc. Shiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeet! I don't even know where to begin. From Chopper's monster form, Zoro's Asura blade and Sanji's Diable Jambe to Luffy's Gear Second and Third, this arc was upping the scale of the crew's abilities to ridiculous levels on every junction. Robin's origin was of course in typical One Piece fashion a story of a child witnessing the sacrifice of his/her parental figure for their own survival, but it didn't make it any less great. I also liked how at the end Luffy (and Chopper) are still clueless about Usopp being Sogeking. I also enjoyed the throwbacks to the Elbaf warriors (two of my favorite side-characters of the show) and I'll be disappointed to see Chimney, Kokoro and the rabbit go. Over the course of the arc Chimney might've grown into another one of my favorite characters. How Oda manages to make every single fucking side character into a well-developed enjoyable character? I don't fucking know, but he pulls it off all the time.
Speaking of, I assume the return (and demise) of Going Merry is supposed to be the second tear-inducing moment you mentioned a year ago? If you wondered how I made this astute observation, it were the tears that wouldn't stop running down my face that gave it away. Once again I'm not sure how Oda can pull this shit off as easy as he does. The whole voice calling out to them and how the ship's spirit led itself there should be the most corny and cheesy shit ever, so why the fuck am I balling up like an emotional child. What is this madness, Books?

Apparently not. I was talking about Robin grabbing Franky's nuts, which causes Luffy and Chopper desperately pleading her to let his nuts go.
Sanji's and Chopper's reactions to their new bounties were funny too though. Mostly because of Sanji's picture. I'm surprised that with Chopper's monster form his bounty wasn't a lot higher though.

Where would you guys rate the Thriller Bark arc? I hate traditional (monster) horror and so far there's way too much of that. The typical One Piece humor has helped me pull through it but unless this story starts taking some turns rather soon I feel like it's gonna be a chore getting through this.

Thriller Bark is alright. Although having Moria and Oars as antagonists is a lil' lame, but I feel Nami, Sanji, and Brooke made up for it. The comedy, like you said, evened it out. It gave some one of my favorite moments in One Piece also.

Dr Doom

It looks like the turnaround point for the arc is here with the revival of Oars. I figure the trio will have to fight their shadow zombie versions with the rest of the crew fighting Moria and his cronies. Probably the sloppiest executed setup to an arc yet, but we'll see what happens next.

Stuff like this is why Oda is the GOAT. It's like there's not a character in the OP universe that he doesn't love or forget about. I swear at this point it's only a matter of time before we get to see Gaimon again.

Agreed. I love the way Oda sets up character relations hundreds of chapters in advance, it's one of the best things about OP.

smh @ me figuring out Usopp would be immune to Perona's negative ghosts because I was thinking about how that would never work on me because I'm already too depressive, lol.
