For discussing all Manga.

Being that this is the official MANGA thread and not the general all-purpose anime/manga thread... I hope that I can put the average/above average comic reader on to some good stuff.

and vice verse.

PLEASE don't be put off by the back-to-forth reading order or the fact that it's black and white. A LOT of the themes in manga closely mirrors the themes in american comics.... but sometimes with a more adult bent on things.

You also don't have to wait a month++ for your favorite works. Shit comes out once a week and always on time.

Oh, if you're into the more popular books like One Piece, Bleach or Naruto (ugh), feel free to discuss it. But I can't stand it, so I ain't touching it.

And of course.... If you feel like starting a thread to discuss your favorite works, feel free.

So far some of the comic people, Capo, turtle, MM, Ktulu, NJ should pop up soon. I've contacted everyone today but it's just wait and see how many of them actually read their pm's (lol) and sign up immediately. Just get to posting around the spot so it looks active and more will start dripping in. It's still early after all (for you guys, I've been at it for half my day now, lol).

I was reading Aiki, but the raws never got scanlated past chapter 68. Other than that, I'm reading Naruto, Claymore, and Berserk. I'm also reading the recent chapters of Vinland Saga and although a skipped a huge amount of chapters in the middle, I still know what's going on pretty well and the flashbacks help.

I'm gonna start reading Oyasumi Punpun. Inio's an interesting mangaka.

I stopped reading The Breaker: New Waves because I'd rather not be following a series like that weekly. I much prefer to read all of it at once since if I hadn't done that for the first series, I may have dropped it before it picked up.

I've been meaning to pick up Liar Game. How does it compare to other brain twisting mind screwing manga?

Liar Game is pretty interesting, some of the games are great to read and trying to figure out how they will win is fun. My only problem with it is that the manga is packed with dialogue of explanation. I understand it's needed so you can follow what's happening, but sometimes I think things are explained too many times. LG is still a worthwhile read though.

THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO READ LOL fuck errything else

Lol! I love both of those. Getting to the see the Golden Age arc in its original manga format was awesome and reading the parts which the anime missed out was cool. Gantz is sooo addictive, never read a manga faster than that. Caught up to the 333 chapters in 5 days. Tae <3

Although, I think you would love the action in the Shamo(martial arts) and Vinland Saga(Vikings) manga. Also, Homunculus may lack action but it's so trippy and a great mindfuck, I think you'd enjoy it.

Working on blocking out my biases and giving any and all manga a fair chance with the only condition being that the art must be good. If I don't like the art at all then I can't read it. But, if the manga itself turns out to be crap after reading a good chunk, I'll drop it. It's actually easier to do this when I don't read synopses; they cause me to make up my mind before I even give a series a chance.

So far, it's going okay. I started Akira and I'm 106 pages in. I wanted to just stop reading at times, but I'm sticking with it. Fortunately, my attention span is more malleable than before so it's not so tough to persist when nothing quite makes sense yet. I'm also reading Bakuman right now, I read the first two chapters but I'm re-reading them to familarize myself before I go forward.

Man, I should make a journal thread for this and track my progress towards being an otaku. It seemed to work with my first journal, why not make a second?

the REAL problem is gonna be the fact that you can zoom through 100 chapters of a manga in one sitting. Me and Black were having a discussion on it a while ago... Let's say we all started reading Slam Dunk tomorrow.

You'll get some of us trying to write it out chapter by chapter and failing. It's too easy to get caught up. You'll get some of us (polly me) being on chapter 151 by the next day and doing their best not to drop spoilers. You'll get someone who's only on chapter 6 because of time restraints...

it's really all more tricky than it sounds.

Then I don't want to try and come to an agreement with everyone like "We're only gonna read this many chapters a day!" because THEN reading manga will feel like a job. Folks will be posting "have you read so and so yet? no? then you need to hurry up!" like they're you're boss and you're getting paid.

Dr Doom
02-24-2011, 10:34 AM
Well, if you don't think you can do chapter per chapter, then just look at Books' MAL, pick a manga he's progressed at quite a bit but hasn't finished and pick that up. It's not like it's a set rule we all have to start on the same manga and discuss it with each chapter, just do what works best for you.

Yeah, I've thought about that aswell. No real way to get around it. If a manga is interesting though, I can read a lot in a day. I don't really read manga chapter by chapter, always make sure I finish atleast 1 volume in a sitting.

Chapter
02-24-2011, 01:11 PM
It's not ADHD; it's me fighting against the overwhelming sense of indifference I have even to my interests.

As far as picking one manga, instead of it being a discussion, it should be more like individual people logging their progress all in one thread, and if a discussion starts then so be it. Just be careful to avoid spoilers and it shouldn't be so bad. And yeah, there is the issue of covering massive amounts of story in a short time, but I can actually do pretty well with making post-by-post updates of minor events and details that catch my attention.

Danbo
02-24-2011, 01:48 PM

aahhhh.... good man!

I guess my only solo decision is what to start reading and chronicling. I was the only one in it, but I admit I had HELLA fun updating my Mirai Nikki thread in the old forum.

Until I sat down and read 200+ chapters in one sitting. Then I was like "maaaan, I ain't trying to explain all that shit!"

I guess it's best to take the Earnest Hemingway approach to writing: When it's starting to get good and you can't wait to write what's next.... then stop right then and there. That way, you'll ALWAYS be looking forward to the next time you'll start writing.

Yotsuba&! is the funniest manga going, love it. BLAME! has absolutely incredible artwork, possibly the best I've ever seen. Although on the writing side Nihei prefers to use illustration over narration and let the reader piece things together, so I dunno if that's what you're looking for.

For a manga with more meat in the story, yet excellent artwork, you simply can't go wrong with Oyasumi Punpun. Asano is one crazy ass genius I'm tellin ya. Punpun mixes normality with absurdity so effortlessly, reading it is like pure euphoria.

Dr Doom
02-25-2011, 07:56 PM
You make both BLAME! and Oyasumi Punpun sound brilliant so I don't know which one to choose. What are they about?

Danbo
02-25-2011, 08:06 PM
BLAME! synopsis:

Killy is a man of few words. He wanders, seemingly endlessly, through a lonely, gargantuan labyrinth of concrete and steel, fighting off cyborgs and other futuristic nightmares, searching only for something called Net Terminal Genes. And he has a very powerful gun, which he uses without hesitation whenever anything resembling danger rears its ugly head.
Who is this quiet, violent, determined man and what are these Genes he seeks? The small communities he finds tucked into the crevices of this towering, dystopic ruin hardly give him leads on his treasure, driving him to find larger enclaves of civilization where people can reveal more about the world he lives in and the quarry he seeks.

Oyasumi Punpun synopsis:

Witness the titular Punpun - who is depicted as a tiny, caricatured bird in an otherwise normal human setting - as he copes with his dysfunctional family and friends, his love interest, his oncoming adolescence and his hyperactive mind.

If you want a manga with an atmosphere like you've never felt before read BLAME! The world that Nihei creates is so unlike any type of human civilisation, it sucks you right in. The atmosphere is honestly one of the biggest reasons I gave the manga a 10, no other title can touch it in that department.

Oyasumi Punpun is the best drama/comedy around. Punpun's behaviour is so erratic and crazy, he'll have you laughing at his antics all the time. There are no normal characters in this manga, everyone is a little crazy with their own problems and the way Punpun and his family are drawn as caricatured birds just pushes the absurdity level so high, but Asano is so great in his writing that you never feel like he's doing it just to be different.

Dr Doom
02-25-2011, 08:10 PM
I think I'll start with BLAME!, simply because it seems like a greater contrast with Yotsuba. Oyasumi Punpun sounds hilarious though and will probably be the one after that (unless I quit after one issue like you did Planetary, smh).

Read all the available chapters of Nihei Tsutomu's latest manga 'Knights of Sidonia' very different from the usual Nihei. The story is nice and developing fine, albeit much more commonplace than his other stuff, with it being set in space and having mechs. The mech designs are great though. Sidonia, the ship that the people live on is probably the strangest looking spaceship ever, it's basically an asteroid with a big ass pillar through it, lol.

My only real complaint is Nihei's change of art style, I just don't see why he did it. The art isn't bad but compared to his GOAT level Blame! art, KoS is just a big step down. My reaction to his change in style was basically

But KoS is published in a seinen magazine, there was no need to make it shounen-esque.

Hm, I see. But I still think the tone of the story is more shounen-esque than his other works, so it makes sense that he changed his style to complement it.

Danbo
02-27-2011, 11:31 PM
I agree, the tone isn't as dark as his other manga and he changed his method of storytelling for it, including much more speech. I have no problem with him changing his style if it works, but I just feel like this style kinda loses a lot of the detail he used to have. There's still some excellent art present though, like on all the double page spreads.

Chapter
02-27-2011, 11:40 PM
Yeah, and I still prefer his other stories to this since I've never liked mechs. I just checked it out since it has Nihei's name on it.

Danbo
02-27-2011, 11:46 PM
I quite like mechs. What's good about KoS is that the mechs aren't overpowered with a whole arsenal of crazy weapons, so there's more teamwork involved rather than just one suit raping everything.

Why are you reading a manga with rape in if you find it unpleasant?

1. Didn't see it coming, or didn't think she would actually be that dumb. She was too naive.
2. Usually I avoid manga with rape because only tragedy have it, and it's often times just to be edgy when it's there or they could've went without it. It sucked when I read it in this particular manga because the situation is realistic and based on actual events (and tragedies).

Kanojo wo Mamoru 51 no Houhou, in English 51 Ways to Protect Your Lover.

February 23rd, 20XX.
Looking for a job in the famous TV station at Odaiba, college senior Jin Mishima attended the recruitment orientation. Not far away from the station, Nanako Okano, a gothic lolita trying to attend a concert, found out that her friends tricked her about the concert ticket because of jealousy. The two bumped into each other and "reunited" -- they were junior high classmates -- moments before an earthquake of Richter Scale 8.1 turned the island (the entire city, in fact) into ruins.

From here on, 51 Ways is a predictable but remarkably believable survival adventure. Based on a well-researched novel by Minoru Watanabe, the series paints a picture not quite as explicit and horrifying as ones in other apocalyptic fiction, but one that is frightening in it's detail.

The art is still sick, the amount of linework is deceptively low but every line's so well-placed and there's a good contrast struck by the right number of tones that Jin-Hwan uses that it looks extremely detailed to the eye (but very clean). I haven't seen many artists use thinner lines for inking as effectively as he has.

The art has gotten absolutely friggin' ridiculous in terms of character designs (the safeguards) and the totality of destruction. Sickness! And with the addition of Cibo it seems the plot (and the setting) will be expanded on a bit more than Killy walking through endless hallways/bridges/sewers blasting the shit out of freaktards looking for net genes.

And finished Vol. 4 of Yotsuba&! as well. The chapter were Yotsuba makes her own newspaper (about Fuuka's broken heart) and makes 'milk' for her dad had me in stitches. It's once Killy and Cibo have made their way to the level above and stumble upon those pygmee looking motherfuckers? Killy regains his ability to identify people and objects and stuff with his eyes and finds out that one girl is a powerful Safeguard, who starts killing people. They take her out but she escapes and they then try to get everybody to hide inside this facility before the Safeguards return. The bridge however is destroyed and Cibo links to Killy to use his other restored ability of talking to the Builders and get the Builder to help the people get inside. Then this huge friggin' Safeguard monster appears and slugs it out with the Builder while releasing Safeguards who start killing the people and stuff explodes and shit crashes down and it's just gigantic battling. Cool, the manga was fully translated only recently, so you can finish it now if you want :) I love how Kurumi is such a tease with Aiba but she does it to develop his character rather than just for the sake of adding ecchi moments, the relationship between the two of them is brilliant.

and koyuko is the most broken character in this book. But just like kodomo no Jikan, if you scared of the seedy underbelly of what makes real life people tick, this isn't somethign you should be reading.

Hell, if I had MY way, I'd make adults read this kind of stuff before they became teachers. If they said it was horible and disgusting or simply porn, I'd burn their resumes and blacklist them from ever working with children or teenagers.

it's a pretty cool lil manga... of course it doesn't have that *PUNCH* feeling that The Breaker has.... It meets somewhere in between The Breaker and AIKI, feelingwise. I was mreh at first, but I started really liking it around chapter 9. And you're right. It's a non-angular Joe Mad style. The fact that it's read left to right for some odd reason means it takes some getting used to. Funny, innit?

I guess by the time I'm done with it, you guys should all be done with Blame! Then I can pick Blame up and act like I just discovered it and go on and on about how great it is and invite you all to read it with me. may even make a Blame! thread.

X) From that picture, I'd say it's pretty slick. The inks are thick and there's a nice contrast between white and black so it also gives the guy a sense of weight, which now that I think about it isn't really conveyed in comics very well.

False Profit
03-16-2011, 05:44 PM
exactly. too many colors and not enough ink in the way. There was even an anime out last season that used heavy inks to GREAT effect and bloodletting. I didn't watch it, though. anti ecchi and all that.

Chapter
03-16-2011, 06:01 PM
Yeah, tone abuse leads to alot of manga looking like a sloppy mess when the pics are enlarged. Since manga (especially those tiny-ass Japanese volumes) are printed pretty small, it doesn't look too bad on paper. This manhwa (it's a manhwa right?) looks like it has a nice balance of detail and simplicity.

I remember looking at Veritas once or twice and putting it after a chapter or so but I think I'll give it a chance now if it gets better.

Chapter
03-18-2011, 01:06 PM

I've come to realize that I'm a lot more lenient with manga than anime when it comes to The Slow Boil. Take Alive: The Final Evolution (http://myanimelist.net/manga.php?id=219) for instance. It started off slow as hell. But I stuck with it and enjoyed it immensely. I try to give the writer enough time to grow into his characters.

Chapter
03-18-2011, 02:10 PM
The synopsis for that story kinda reminds me of Lives. Go figure *shrugs*

Yeah, I noticed a while back that I'm more lenient with manga than I am with anime, and that's primarily because I can read manga as fast or as slow as I want, whereas with an anime I can't watch it sped up and then slow it down once things start to pick up. For most shounen, four chapters = roughly 1 episode, but the time taken to read 4 chapters<<<<the time taken to watch one episode.

Really? The architecture and cyberpunk influence is pretty gritty but the characters themselves look pretty delicate lol.
