Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic, creative team of the new ongoing series, "Ultimate Comics Ultimates #1.
Hickman said the goal is to "match or eclipse" Ultimates Volume 1.
"
What we find out is that [S.H.I.E.L.D. is] actually a reflection of kind of American policy right now, and we're extremely over-extended, and the Ultimates are kind of at a breaking point. Our cast is going to be a lot of the guys that we know and love. Certainly Nick Fury, and Iron Man, and Thor, as well as some other really interested characters, like Spider-Woman, and Hulk, and other people to be named."
Captain America, which Hickman said is a major plot point. The first arc is titled "The Republic is Burning."
"We're setting up a lot of stuff that's going to be used in the other Ultimate Universe books that are going forward."
"I think one of the most attractive things that we're doing is that we're building a cohesive universe in that all of the Ultimate books will be tied-in together pretty tightly,"
Hickman calls the upcoming slate of titles a "massive rebranding and rebuilding" of the Ultimate Universe.
It's why Esad is going to be perfect on this book," Hickman says, speaking in terms of scale.
"I don't think people will get it entirely until they actually see what we're trying to accomplish."
"The Ultimates is one of those things that I had kind of circled on my 'I would really, really love to work on' projects list,
I think the Ultimates should be one of the better and bigger books in the Marvel Universe, and I think that looking back at what Mark [Millar] and Bryan [Hitch] did on Ultimates Volume 1 and 2, I think that's a pretty good example of Marvel Comics done right," Hickman said.
"There's a lot of fertile, fertile ground there," Hickman continued,
"And I certainly feel honored that I was asked."
Now press questions — "how does this play into Ultimate Fallout?"
"
I think we're looking at the Fallout series as really a bridge from Death of Spider-Man to the actual launch of our new Ultimate line," Hickman replied.
"Fallout is looking at pretty much all the prominent characters that are going to be in the Ultimate relaunch."
"We're all writing it together, it's going to be a real interesting book," Hickman said.
"
There's a lot of introspection, but there's also a lot of really cool set-ups," Paniccia added.
"
I certainly like the fact that I'm only dealing with a couple of other creators as far as making sure my stuff jives," Hickman said as to what attracted him to the project.
It's an opportunity to build books with Hydrogen, it's not a book that's going to be saddled with decades and decades of continuity,
"The Ultimate Universe shouldn't be a direct reflection of the Marvel Universe," Hickman continued. "Thor should be not the same in both Iron Man should not be the same in both."
