People are saying it's overrated these days but I really enjoyed that story. Anyways, someone is bound to come in and tell you to read Action Comics 775. It actually is one of his best stories though. In recent stuff I really liked the Geoff Johns run on Action Comics. Wiki tells me it was these issues.

Action Comics #837-840, 844-846, 850 (With Kurt Busiek), 851, Annuals 10 and 11, and 855-857 (With Richard Donner), 858-873. They're self-contained story arcs for the most part so you can always read what you find interesting out of them and skip other stories.

Story arcs in these issues were Escape from Bizarro World, Brainiac, Last Son, and Legion of Superheroes.

I'm actually way behind on Superman stuff so if something of note happened since then I'm all ears.

It's a great story and yes the movies DO suck. I like em alot cause I grew up with them but objectively speaking they are pretty dated and lackluster by today's standards. Superman: The Movie IS the most influential superhero movie ever without question though. In this new comic book movie renaissance everything from Batman Begins to Spider-Man and X-Men were inspired by it's structure the directors of all those films said it themselves.

However only the first 50 minutes mean a lot to me as far as great cinema is concerned. It pretty much falls apart as it goes along at least as a representation of the tone of the comics anyway and a showcase as to why Superman is one of the best around. Makes him too much of a sucka for love ass chump and Lex is a damn joke. But we're getting a new movie that will hopefully fix all of this.

Anyway if you end up liking Red Son I highly recommend Superman Adventures Vol. 1 - 4 by the same author Mark Millar. Those contain some of the greatest and most underrated Superman stories ever. Lots of brilliance all around in there.

Other good ones for a beginner to Superman

Birthright (the new movie seems to be cribbing ideas from here)
Secret Origin (see: Birthright)
Kingdom Come
Up, Up, and Away
Speeding Bullets (a story where Superman becomes Batman)
Secret Identity (what if Clark Kent existed in our world?)
Godfall
Son of Superman
Superman: Peace on Earth
Lex Luthor: Man of Steel
...For The Man Who Has Everything
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
Exile
For All Seasons
All-Star Superman Vol. 1 and Vol. 2

As well as the aforementioned Action Comics #775 & #850, Brainiac, Escape from Bizarro World, Last Son and Legion of Superheroes. Then if you dig those and would like to dig deeper I'd say try Action Comics & Superman Archives featuring the works of Siegel & Shuster. Man of Steel and all related series by John Byrne (Ie: World of Krypton). As well as any work by Elliot S! Maggin and Cary Bates collected in various trades like SUPERMAN IN THE 70's and SUPERMAN: PAST AND FUTURE. Also Death of Superman, Return of Superman, World Without A Superman and Our Worlds At War. As well as Superman Beyond by Grant Morrison.

You need to read Paul Cornell's run on Action Comics starring Lex Luthor ASAP that shit is ingenious as hell. Also after a slow period the main SUPERMAN title is starting to pick up speed again under Chris Roberson.

I'll have to check out that Roberson stuff as well.

Son of Superman

FYI when I went to the shop to pick up my comic books for the week today I saw this in the new release section. DC just reprinted it as a 100 page spectacular which I didn't even know they had planned on ever doing. So it should be very easy to find at torrent sites etc. right now considering it got re-released today.
