View Full Version : Let's be honest about the South
They have the least amount of classic albums out of any region. And pretty much outside of Outkast, they have no universal classics.

The Midwest. Sure, they have some strong artists in Em, Lupe, Common and Kanye, but outside of Resurrection there's little agreement on which of their albums are truly classic.

East got the most as a given... and by "Universal Classic" I mean you gotta admit its classic in the eyes of a shit load lot more people than you.... even if you don't like it. For instance, I think Doggystyle and The Chronic suck. I think AEOM and Illmatic are mehhh albums. BUt I can't deny that they're universal classics.
Going by that definition, I'd actually say the midwest has the least amount of Universal Classics, with The Souf and The West prolly running neck and neck and The East leading by a super large margin.

Resurrection? That's more of an underground classic to me. MMLP and College Dropout are the Midwests universal classics imo. Maybe Eminem Show and Late Registration as well. E-1999-Eternal is a universal classic too.
I'd say it's between the Midwest and the South for least universal classics, then the West, and East Coast wins by far.

The least?.... Only if you're a regionist, and don't really get into the rest of the scene. There's no such thing as a Universal classic. We've had this discussion about 6 times now between the IC, and then TC. You like what YOU like. No-one's opinion is some incontrovertible truth spread throughout the star systems and shit.
With that said, you can't compare a scene like NYC where Hip-Hop started, and was going strong for years before others were being recognized or even got into it like that, and say "Well they have less classics". Of course they do. In your typical east coasters' mind, no region will EVER come close.
Which turns this into a circular argument that goes nowhere. Ya need open-minded folks to even have this discussion.

I got bored and counted the number of non-Outkast Southern albums on the www.rateyourmusic.com top 100 Hip Hop album list.
28 - Goodie Mob - Soul Food
38 - UGK - Ridin Dirty
41 - CunninLynguists - A Piece of Strange
42 - Scarface - The Diary
86 - Geto Boys - Grip It!
And there were 4 Outkast albums on the list. *Shrug.
Just sayin.

the south does get an unfair amount of hate. Especially from regional heads that are mad that they are not (or no longer) on the spotlight.
When one of them cats (J. Cole) has been dubbed as Hip Hop's savior of the future by the public, that makes their blood boil.

Who is crowning J.Cole the savior? Dude is irrelevant and his buzz has died down. Casual hip hop fans don't even know who he is. He's talented, no doubt, but he's still just a mixtape rapper.

Bravo.
But I think the south still has the least amount of classics out of any region.

Never will. It's still fuck Jay-Z, Tupac was a God, white kids in love with Eminem, Fuck Jay-Z, We love the UG but won't put a dollar in their pockets, Fuck Jay-Z, East Coast vs Everybody because they're stuck in 1994.
It's all still hilarious to poke fun at though. Which I do on a regular basis.

I'm in a severe minority, but i truly believe UGK has OutKast beat in catalog (not lyrically). I think they were both around equal for their first four, but UGK 4 Life and Underground Kingz >>> Idlewild and Speakerboxxx/Love Below.

UGK has only one album that can compete with Outkast's first 4 albums. Thank you.

ATLiens is better than Super Tight and Ridin Dirty but not by much. Aquemini ties those two albums. Southernplayalistic and Too Hard Too Swallow are both even, same with Dirty Money and Stankonia. OutKast began losing the catalog battle when UGK had the better double album.

UGK and Outkast are 2 truly different groups. Different in any way possible, except that they're both from the South.
What you just did was saying: "Well, album A from group X was better than album B from group Y". If you had maths you know you can't do that because they're different.
I wouldn't have had a problem if you just said "I like UGK's sound more and I prefer their work over Outkast's work" .. How hard is that?
Aquemini ties Super Tight & Ridin' Dirty? How? Production? Huh?

So you can't compare the albums because the groups make two different styles of music?

I never stated my opinion as fact.
And I went by overall enjoyment.
But then again weren't you the one that said Ross had a better collection of work than Lupe? And Ross and Lupe make two different styles of music. So yea
