I got to thinking while I was at a friends house and Kanye West's name was brought up as the "best rapper out right now."

Is Kanye West the only rapper with "classic" albums that has never spit a classic verse? I'm talking about a verse that is rewind worthy.....I can't think of one. I mean, his latest release basically got 5's accross the board, and was considered flawless by many, but i couldn't even come up with one classic verse from that album....by kanye, of course.

Im sure there's one out there....there has to be....right?

I wanna say the last verse of Jesus Walks but that'd be Rhymefest's

why not? because it didn't "change the game" or have the internet going nuts, didn't spawn a catchphrase?

It's not all that complex I just frankly think the song is trash.

Really? That's arguably Kanye's best song.

Never Let Down is trash???? To each his own but that's the first time I've heard someone say that.

Yeah, even if you think Kanye didn't drop a classic verse on that it's still far-fetched to call it trash.

I don't think Never Let Me down is trash, but it's not exactly that great either. None of the verses are above the level of good imo.

Dr Doom

Hrmm... but do you think Kanye has ever dropped a classic verse?

KidFlash
03-20-2011, 10:14 PM
Family Business, Last Call, All Falls Down, Can't Tell Me Nothing, Diamonds from SL, Gone

Kanye's verses are nothing exciting if you're an Eminem fan, but there's a lot of entertaining wordplay and witty shit

I'd definitely say Last Call as well.

Forgot all about Family Business... that shit was powerful; Gone & Last Call too
I wouldn't say Diamonds though... I always felt the beat made that track

The last sentence goes for 90% of Kanye's music lol. And for Diamonds, just read the lyrics, dope wordplay on everything

People really trying to say that Kanye spit a classic verse on never let me down?

I get down for my grandfather who took my momma
Made her sit that seat where white folks ain't wanna us to eat
At the tender age of 6 she was arrested for the sit in
With that in my blood I was born to be different
Now *****s can't make it to ballots to choose leadership
But we can make it to Jacob and to the dealership
That's why I hear new music
And I just don't be feeling it
Racism still alive they just be concealing it
But I know they don't want me in the damn club
They even made me show I.D to get inside of Sam's club
I did dirt and went to church to get my hands scrubbed
Swear I've been baptised at least 3 or 4 times
But in the land where *****'s praise
Yukons and getting paid
It gon' take a lot more than coupons to get us saved
Like it take a lot more than do-rags to get your waves
Noting sadder than that day my girl father past away
So I promised to Mr Rany I'm gonna marry your daughter
And u know I gotta thank u for they way that she was brought up
And I know that u were smiling when u see that car I bought her
And u sent tears from heaven when u seen my car get balled up
But I can't complaint what the accident did to my Left Eye
Cuz look what a accident did to Left Eye
First Aaliyah and now romeo must die
I know a got angels watching me from the other side

What's so impressive about that? I think when it comes to Kanye people confuse classic songs with classic verses....like, that beat is sick, the sample is cool, and the song as a whole is one of his best, but the question posed was classic verse....and it's nowhere near a classic verse.

Dr Doom

I think it is, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it. And unless you're looking for some super lyrical multi syllable shit I haven't heard an argument about why it isn't.

if you go by the way people stamp 'classic' on albums, there's only two classic verses in history:

AZ's on Life's a Bitch
Deck's on Triumph.

everything else is up for debate, with people simply saying 'this isn't classic because I don't like it'. lol

I can name numerous verses that I liked, that I wouldn't say are "classic." I liked the Kanye verse in never let me down (minus a few lines), but that doesn't mean it's a classic hip hop verse that you could use to represent the genre.

It's hard to denote a Kanye verse because you dont know which ones he writes and which ones he doesn't. But "Gone" (closing verse) His verse from Jeezy's "I Put On" ws classic and Jay-Z really shoudlnt have even tried to remake it after that. We gotta be careful about dismissing shit just because we don't like it. There are many verba, cadence/delivery factors involved as well that wouldn't translate on paper

And I haven't heard an argument for why it is classic.

It's a verse that feels personal, and touches on many socially relevant subjects without feeling fake/manufactured. It uses some clever ('fun') wordplay along the way which makes it even more enjoyable. Overall it's a verse that combines the best of HipHop lyricism (social relevancy, genuine personal feelings and wordplay). Classic.

If you're looking for that then there are probably no more than 5-10 classic verses in the entire history of HipHop.

Man, man, man
If my manager insults me again I will be assaulting him
After I fuck the manager up then I'm gonna shorten the register up
Let's go back, back to the Gap
Look at my check, wasn't no scratch
So if I stole, wasn't my fault
Yeah I stole, never got caught
They take me to the back and pat me
Askin' me about some khakis
But let some black people walk in
I bet they show off their token blackie
Oh now they love Kanye, let's put him all in the front of the store
Saw him on break next to the 'No Smoking' sign with a blunt and a Mall'
Takin' my hits, writin' my hits
Writin' my rhymes, playin' my mind
This fuckin' job can't help him
So I quit, y'all welcome
Y'all don't know my struggle
Y'all can't match my hustle
You can't catch my hustle
You can't fathom my love dude
Lock yourself in a room doin' five beats a day for three summers
That's a different world like Kree Summers
I deserve to do these numbers
The kid that made that deserves that Maybach
So many records in my basement
I'm just waitin' on my spaceship, blaow

if that aint classic then i just dont know what is man

this one isnt classic in term of lyricism or content or anything like that but this is one of those "juicy" verse that every one knows

I told her to drive over in your new whip
Bring some friends you cool with
I'm gonna bring the cool whip
Then I want you to strip
See you is my new chick
So we get our grind on
She be grabbing, calling me Biggie like Shine home
Man, I swear she fine homes
Why she always lying though
Telling me them diamonds when she know they rhinestones
She got a light skinned friend look like Michael Jackson
Got a dark skinned friend look like Michael Jackson
I play 'Ready for the World' - she was ready for some action
My dawg said you ain't no freak, so you got to prove my man wrong
I'm a play this Vandross
You're gonna take your pants off
I'm gonna play this Gladys Knight
Me and you're gonna get right

THIS is the reason that 3/4 of the time I wind up listening to a song or artist that a producer got a sample from WAAAY more than I listen to the hip hop/rap song.

I mean, I still love hip hop... but I can't honestly say that Hip Hop is my favorite genre of music anymore. I can't say I outgrew hip hop, it's just that hip hop stopped GROWING.

The third verse of "All Falls Down"

I say fuck the police, thats how I treat em
We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom
We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth
That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?"
Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack
And a white man get paid off of all of that
But I ain't even gon act holier than thou
Cause fuck it, I went to Jacob with 25 thou
Before I had a house and I'd do it again
Cause I wanna be on 106 and Park pushing a Benz
I wanna act ballerific like it's all terrific
I got a couple past due bills, I won't get specific
I got a problem with spending before I get it
We all self conscious I'm just the first to admit it

^ Sounds like Rhymefest, lol. A bunch of lines give it away (the Michelangelo line for one) but the "put some Mase in your voice" line and its delivery makes it dead obvious. That's Rhymefest wit.
