What’s up Planet Ill fam, Happy Labor Day Weekend (well, here in the States anyway…)!

It’s time once again for the latest Indiesent Exposure installment, Planet Ill’s weekly music column where I drop some FREE music downloads & info about quality independent music artists of different genres who deserve serious credit for keeping things lively & original in the music world.

Indiesent Exposure is designed to give your ears some respite from some of the daily audio wackness that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio’s definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.

If you like what you hear & download, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.

This week’s Indiesent Exposure music selections are set to jump off your weekend audio journey proper with some fantastic Hip-Hop, Rock, Electronica, Afro-Punk and Soul Music grooves.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Before it became hip in the mainstream, Bronx, New York’s Geechi Suede from latter day Hip-Hop classic crew Camp Lo and producer/drummer Apple Juice Kid formed up the collaborative project FreeBass 808 a few years ago to step out of the traditional rap music convention on the airwaves by meshing the genre with of Dance, Electro, House and Drum & Bass Music.

Through various single, EP and mixtape releases, the duo has shown that they’re an actual “Best of Both Worlds” combination and not a cliche of the tired “look what we can do” mashup projects that have been all over the place lately.

FreeBass 808’s latest project is the 7th Galaxy/Psychic Energy project is definitely music ready for both the dancefloor and lyric lovers. Mixed & hosted by DJs Mick Boogie and Mighty Mi, Geechi Suede energetically and deftly flows over Apple Juice Kid’s lushly eclectic production on everything from love to partying to what’s real friendship.

Fans of the artists’ solo work, as well as listeners tired of the same old Hip-Hop experiments should really dig what FreeBass808 is bringing to the table – wrap up that last BBQ of the summer with this soundtrack and rock to it during all seasons.

The Washington, DC based group DeVille presents the full-throated Soul Music vocal delivery of lead singer GiGi Gordon over driving Punk Rock guitar, bass and drums (not Hot Topic Emo Punk mentality, but Sex Pistols work) from fellow members Ian Graham, Patches Mitchell & Trevor Thrift. The blatant Afro-Punk and Pop Music sensibilities of the crew work out well and are on display on their high-tempo 2 song sampler. “Screaming” has almost a Hair Metal meets Surf Rock vibe while “Cheated” would make a perfect compliment to Cee-Lo’s “F** You” with the pissed off vibe of relationships gone wrong.

DeVille is a tight unit that meshes all of their sensibilities masterfully, keeping a solid groove with their songs an audience can easily dance and/or mosh to along catchy hooks that stick in your head long after the songs are over.

According to their blog, an full length album is on the way so hopefully the masses will get some more fly sounds from the crew soon.

Brooklyn, NY (via Minnesota) artist Sarah White’s musical creations blend an eclectic mixture of Spoken Word, Soul, Hip-Hop and Dancehall vibes, keeping things exciting in her vastly growing catalog of music.

Having a long history of making moves in the international indie music scene as both a solo artist and in various groups (including Black Blondie and Traditional Methods) along with as opening up for stand up mainstream musicians such as Jill Scott, J*Davey & The Roots, she definitely has strong bonafides as a talent to keep an eye on.

Her latest single “Fade” goes all over the world with the remixes, placing Sara White’s smooth, soulful & almost Bossa Nova styled jazzy vocals over some slamming Drum & Bass, Electro, Techno, Hip-Hop and Downtempo productions, finding a flavor almost anyone could get mellow, zone out and relax to at anytime.

If you like what you hear and download, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.

This week’s Indiesent Exposure music selection puts the spotlight on a great music crew that blends Indie Rock, Electronica, Afro-Punk and World Music vibes.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Let’s get it in – download, sit back, relax & hope you enjoy the grooves:

Los Angeles, California has always had an extremely eclectic music scene due to it’s blend of different cultures, sounds and peoples.

It’s birthed (or at least nurtured) everything from modern day Gangsta Rap to Hair Metal to the “Cool Jazz” movement among other numerous music genres.

The group Divisible solidly builds upon the D.I.Y. creative music history of the area with their own adventurous blend of Afro-Punk, Rock, Funk, World and Electronica influenced music. Consisting of core members Shola Akinshemoyin Vaughn (lead singer/vocalist) and drummer Albert Sadia (with different producers & other musicians hopping in the mix), the duo’s lush and atmospheric sounds are set to grab people’s attention, feet and head nods.

Along with the wall of well-balanced instrumentation, Divisible keeps things lively with Shola’s light, sweet-sounding vocals and thoughtful lyrics. Her style of singing reminds me of other female vocalists who rock with diverse music crews such as Massive Attack, Morcheeba and Jazznova; not overpowering, but meshing perfectly to create a particular mood to elevate the listener.

The sampler below consists of 3 mid-to-high tempo tracks from Divisible’s last 2 official EP & album releases. Depending on your crowd, these tracks would fit in well to either set off a party or wind down after the end of one.

Folks who like the new wave of alternative music that blends various Rock styles with African-based musical goodies (AfroBeat, Drum & Bass, etc.) such as TV On The Radio and Vampire Weekend or like their lounge music with a kick should fall right into having some Divisible tracks in the mix.

What’s up Planet Ill fam!

It’s time once again for the latest Indiesent Exposure installment, Planet Ill’s weekly music column where I drop some FREE music downloads & info about quality independent music artists of different genres who deserve serious credit for keeping things lively & original in the music world.

Indiesent Exposure is set to give your ears some respite from some of the daily audio wackness, that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio’s definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.

If you like what you hear & download, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.

This week’s Indiesent Exposure music selection features an extremely talented MC whose latest two Hip-Hop projects sounds are both modern & bring listeners back into the memories of the lively NYC indie Hip-Hop scene of the 1990s (R.I.P. to the legendary Fat Beats locations in NYC & LA).

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Let’s get it in – download, sit back, relax & hoping you enjoy the grooves:

Passaic, New Jersey’s (a.k.a. “Project City”) own Rasheed Chappell has put in serious work in the indie Hip-Hop performance and media circuit as both a MC and writer (not just lyrics, but books of stories & poetry) during the past decade.

With his first official full-length music project Future Before Nostalgia dropping in the near future through Ill Friction & Strictly Rhythm plus serious cosignage from O.G. Hip-Hop luminaries such as Kenny “Dope” Gonzales, DJ Clark Kent and Biz Markie on the production boards & beyond, Rasheed Chappell could easily coast just off props if he wanted too for a minute.

Thankfully for the music audience who is slowly getting immune & jaded to the stereotypical 21st century Hip-Hop artist PR moves (9876 YouTube videos, illegitimate cosigns, crass Twitter flooding of links that make cats think zShare is their label, meh UStreams, etc.), the brother comes correct big time with his musical output.

The Future Before Nostalgia EP and The Chappell Show: The Lost Episodes Vol. 2 display an MC who harkens back to the the late 1980s – mid 1990s glory days of high grade NYC-style Street Hip-Hop where a cat could be multi-faceted in doing lyrical, honest,

emotional and balanced reportage from the project rooftops while respecting the B-Boy side of the craft.

The Future Before Nostalgia EP and The Chappell Show: The Lost Episodes Vol. 2 are a boom bap lover’s dream that doesn’t sound dated or as a crass bit of previous MCs in the game.

Rasheed Chappell’s animated flow is straight forward and hard-edged overreally well done soul-tinged production, with a style kind of reminding me of a mix of Big L & early-era Prodigy of Mobb Deep.

There’s no wack dummy rap on any of the tracks on both releases, but the content isn’t too over the top to be seen as boring backback thesaurus BoHo bulls***.

Check out more of what’s good in Rasheed Chappell’s world o’ music & musings over at his official MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/RasheedChappell and tag him on the Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/RasheedChappell.

World Passport is a fantastic resource of old and new school International Music that has been in effect since 2006.

Maintained by teacher, curator and musician Kalil Wilson, this podcast of 1 hour episodes is literally jam packed with worldwide grooves that range from Salsa to Son, Highlife to Hawaian Music, AfroBeat to AfroJazz and everything in between.

A listener could literally zone out on the more mellow shows and/or get their serious dance party on for days off the diverse and fascinating song selections in the podcast archives as well as probably make iTunes or Amazon rich after fulfilling the yearning to cop music from the artists on display.

For people who like to hear what people are grooving to in other countries and languages as well as music history fans, the joints from World Passport should most definitely be pumping in your own personal International Sound System ASAP.

Kompa Direk (No. 1)

Kompa is a musical genre as well as a dance that originated in Haïti. The name is derived from compas, the Spanish word meaning rhythm or tone.

Sung in Haïtian Creole/Patois, Kompa is a uniquely Haïtian musical form, however it does closely share musical attributes in common with it’s neighbors; Dominican Merengue, Cuban Son, Puerto Rican Bomba, and West African/Caribbean Highlife/Calypso. Typically Kompa can be recognized by it’s fast paced rhythm driven by a trap set (heavy use of symbols and snares), congas, tambourine and guiro.

The music is commonly arranged around a verse and chorus pattern which alternates between major and minor keys for each section. Swift staccato or arpeggiated double guitar backing is another trademark of the genre with the solo instrument of choice being some sort of single reeded soundsource; usually saxophone, harmonica, accordion/concertina or electronically synthesized versions fo these instruments.

Big up Haiti!

What’s up Planet Ill fam!

It’s time for the latest Indiesent Exposure installment, Planet Ill’s weekly music column where I drop some FREE music downloads & info about quality independent music artists of different genres who deserve serious credit for keeping things lively & original in the music world.

Indiesent Exposure post by post is set to give your ears some respite from some of the daily audio wackness that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio’s definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.

If you like what you hear & download, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, or go to their shows.

The music selections on deck this week represent the Hip-Hop, Folk and Rock spectrums.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Let’s get into it – download, sit back, relax & enjoy.

Baltimore’s Mark Milly (a.k.a. Lucky) has been putting in work for over a decade in the independent Hip-Hop scene; building his base on the local DC-MD-VA front in the States and beyond.

His last few solo mixtapes (including the insanely brilliant promo flood of #FcukMarkMilly: The Brief-Tape) along with releases from his Young Hustlaz Gettin’ Money collective have been deservedly getting his buzz up both on the streets and via the ultra-critical music world of the Internets.

His latest release with Now or Later EP displays a focused young MC in top form over the pounding hard Soul, almost mid-late 1990s-esque production of long term collaborator Probz.

Mark Milly gives you a nice throwback vibe to thes street rap of old, where you could be that braggadicous outlandish cat, but still be free enough to not place yourself in a box expressing feelings about what’s going in your surroundings a la Freddie Gibbs. With straight-edged, yet powerful delivery, he skillfully tears through each track with ease and keeps the flows and content steady and interesting throughout the 6 track release.

This is a nicely balanced piece of music goodness, especially for listeners who aren’t too beat for extra rounds of “Hipster Rap” or too much “Scarface/Tony Montana pre-shotgun to the chest” fever dream Hip-Hop that’s currently on the airwaves.

The Now And Later EP is for my listeners who like their street rap up-to-date, smart, lyrically on-point & respectful of not just past Hip-Hop greatness, but striving to keep the artform alive in the future. If Mark Milly keeps on this grind, he’ll be another one of the new wave of dope MCs on the Washington, DC Metro area set to rise to the top. Get more involved with Mark Milly’s music, views, shows and other goodies over at his official website, http://www.TheIncredibleCreation.com.

The original Works Progress Administration (WPA) was named after President Franklin D. Roosevelts’s New Deal initiative in 1939, which put millions of U.S. citizen to work through various construction and arts projects.

One of the main purposes with the WPA to keep high values of strong community and creativity maintained for the populace during what was one of the worst times in the country’s history – The Great Depression.

Santa Barbara, California’s WPA aims to keep the tradition of it’s namesake musically with combining two very traditional forms of Americana – Rock & Roll + Folk Music – into something fresh and creative.

The crew’s lineup is essentially an Indie Rock dream of positive building, including musicians, vocalists & engineering specialists from groups Toad the Wet Sprocket, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello and the Imposters, Cracker, Wilco, Rolling Stones and more.

The Works Progress Administration Live E.P. is sturdy & smooth 5 song introduction to WPA’s vibe, featuring mostly medium to rollicking tempo songs that both balance out and show the relations of Rock and Folk music with great organic interchanges between the instrumentalists and singers throughout the release.

If you want to mellow out a bit, and you dig lush audio soundscapes, the Works Progress Administration should be right up your alley.

What’s up Planet Ill fam!

It’s time for the latest Indiesent Exposure installment, Planet Ill’s weekly music column where I drop some FREE music downloads & info about quality independent music artists of different genres who deserve serious credit for keeping things lively and original in the music world.

Post by post, Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some respite from some of the daily audio wackness that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio’s definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.

If you like what you hear & download, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc. What on this plate for this week’s Indiesent Exposure music selections includes grooves with Hip-Hop, Downtempo, DC Go-Go, Jazz and Rock music influences.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Let’s get into it – download, sit back relax & hope you enjoy everything:

Since 2004 (after getting the blessing of Dr. Cornel West to rock the name), Washington DC’s The Cornel West Theory has been wrecking shop with their high energy blend of Hip-Hop, Rock, Jazz, Blues, DC Go-G0 Music, Funk & spoken word. The In Her Hands: Embryo Capital Pt. 1 mixtape is a proper introduction into 6 man crew’s musical and political aesthetic.

Over 18 tracks , The Cornel West Theory achieves a commendable balancing act of not just keeping the audio end lively for listeners who just want to rock out to the beats (ranging from spare to lush landscapes) but taking care to drop the doses of straightforward social commentary in a way that isn’t shallow, preachy and boring as hell. There is a lot of passion, serious production and mic skills on display throughout all of the project that keeps things very engaging for anyone ready to grab a hold of this release.

For heads who mourn that masters of political Hip-Hop like Dead Prez, Public Enemy, Immortal Technique and others aren’t getting their due (or just like solid Hip-Hop music PERIOD), The Cornel West Theory’s creative contributions should immediately be a part of your soundtrack.

Objektiv One is a fly graphic artist, writer and producer who has been bubbling in Dallas, Texas for the past few years with both his original music creations and ill mash-ups.

He uses Jazz, Emo & Psychadelic Rock Music, Electronica and Downtempo music chunks as building blocks to make some really interesting multi-layered (and just plain toe-tapping funky) revisions of mainstream and indie Hip-Hop joints.

Throughout his catalogue, the average listener can really see he puts in a lot of work to craft his creations and not just be your average run-of-the-mill cat with an MPC in hand.

I chose two of my personal favorite EPs from Objektiv One’s BandCamp page to help people get the party started this weekend – get some fun in your sound system with these joints and enjoy!

What’s up Planet Ill fam!

It’s time for the latest Indiesent Exposure installment, Planet Ill’s weekly music column where I drop some FREE music downloads & info about quality Independent Music artists of different genres who deserve serious credit for keeping things lively & non-cookie cutter status in the music world.

Hopefully post by post, Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some temporary respite from some of the daily audio wackness, boredom and/or iCoonery that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio and TV airwaves’ definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.

If you like what you hear & download up in this section, PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc. This week’s Indiesent Exposure music selections for your audio pleasure are focused in the Hip-Hop arena with some on point remix action and a flashback to the Old School.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Let’s get into it – download, sit back relax & hope you enjoy everything:

By now, remix projects on the internet are as ordinary as vapid orange-y skinned people with tans appearing on reality TV shows (I see you Bravo & MTV). Any schmo with a computer program and an album of breakbeats thinks they can pull out a dope project to propel themselves to DangerMouse or 9th Wonder status, usually with meh to horrible results. At times a remix project feels like watching a three-year old trying to put a bunch of puzzle pieces together to make a picture, regardless of whether they fit.

Thankfully for everyone, London’s Keith “FreshNerd” Mitchell’s production work with 100 Akres Productions is the complete opposite of that in the best way possible. FreshNerd’s work behind the boards earlier this year on the Nas & Bob Marley: Relatives Abroad project and with other independent MCs and singers, made me anxious when i saw The Cyndi Lauper Beat Tape in my mailbox a while ago.

Building from the foundation of modern Pop & Rock music legend Cyndi Lauper’s She So Unusual album for his samples, FreshNerd really creatively puts things together into some fantastic mid-to-high tempo cohesive bangers throughout the beat tapes’ 10 tracks.

From boom-bap beatdown tracks to smoothed out soulful joints to some crunchy, almost Electro sounding deals, each reinterpretation of Cyndi Lauper’s work from FreshNerd’s lab is a winner. One of the things I really like about this particular collection is at the end of each track, you get an uninterrupted bit of the original song to see the beat’s inspiration. On that end, I’ll just say there are some real surprises in the mix on some of these creations (“She Bop” turned into this?!).

Overall, The Cyndi Lauper Beat Tape has some off the wall grooves that not only stand on their own well for people to rock out to and enjoy on a chill day, but should be used for some MCs immediately to make dope songs, push some boundaries and get more of the FreshNerd audio aesthetic out to the masses.

Newark, New Jersey’s own MC/Producer/Engineer/Graphic Designer Internal Quest has been flipping multiple forms of artistic expression to the extreme since his early teenage years to the present.

After making a lot of well-deserved noise and gaining props in the higly competitive New York City Metro independent Hip-Hop music circuit for the past few years, he’s dropped a really dope mixtape with Austraila’s DJ Nino Brown, Flight 973 To Sydney.

The 14 track international music project features mostly original mid-to-high tempo raw & soulful East Coast Boom Bap-styled production that folks who dig the late 1990s/early 2000s underground rap sounds and beyond will definitely enjoy.

Besides the fly diverse high-level audio backgrounds (which alternate between extreme lushness and interesting minimalism depending on the producer), Internal Quest displays engaging versatile and energetic vocal gymnastics over each track along with solid lyricism that holds its own throughout the listening experience.

The project is aided greatly by the fact that all of the MC collabos (which include El Da Sensai, 5FT of Black Moon and indie standouts MC Rafa, Special and Bodat Ink) feel organic and not forced together; a rare thing sometimes in the current day Hip-Hop realm where musicians don’t always build in the studio anymore.

Flight 973 To Sydney’s sequencing and mixing is also well done by DJ Nino Brown, with each song flowing smoothly from one to the next; allowing the listener to actually enjoy the mixtape without ego driven DJ rants and filler.

Overall, Flight 973 To Sydney is an excellent Hip-Hop experience which not only introduces you to Internal Quest (and puts the spotlight on the still chronically slept on state of New Jersey Hip-Hop) but also reinforces that real, original music is alive and kicking in the modern rap world.

What’s up Planet Ill fam!

It’s time for the latest edition of Indiesent Exposure, Planet Ill’s weekly music column where I drop some FREE music downloads & info about quality Independent Music artists of different genres who deserve props for keeping things lively & orginal in the music world.

Post by post, Indiesent Exposure will give your ears some respite from some of the daily audio wackness that bombards the masses through the mainstream radio’s definitions of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, House, World Music, etc.

If you like what you hear & download (some joints of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.The music selections in week’s Indiesent Exposure features some AfroPunk, Rock and Hip-Hop influenced vibes.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Let’s get into it – download, sit back relax & hope you enjoy everything:

Brooklyn’s singer and songwriter Tamar-Kali has been making huge waves in the international Black Rock/AfroPunk scene for quite some time as both a solo artist and backup artist for acts such as Fishbone and Outkast.

Her signature sound on the eclectic 5 song Geechee Goddess Hardcore Warrior Soul EP is an melodic and exciting mixture of traditional Soul, Funk, Electronica and Punk Rock (the real kind, not the Twilight movie/Hot Topic kind) music.

The Geechee Goddess Hardcore Warrior Soul EP is a high octane piece of work that works for heads who either want to mellow out to some tunes or get ready to start trashing in a mosh pit.

With well-crafted lush production on display and a voice that shows both jazz and modern day R&B influences of folks from the past (imagine Grace Jones and Nina Simone meeting up and deciding to get ultra-experimental in the studio ) Tamar-Kali shows a skill set of authenticity and dopeness that slowly but surely is getting acknowledgement in the realm of mainstream Black Music.

Lastly we’re wrapping up this week’s selections with an interesting Hip-Hop blast from the past…

The ‘net music family of Fake Shore Drive made the previously unreleased album from Chicago’s Go Getters, World Record Holders, available for free to the masses along with a nice mini-history about the project.

World Record Holders consists of foundational producution and rhyme work from a pre-G.O.O.D. Music era Kanye West along with significant contributions from GLC, Rhymefest, Mikkey Halstead and other independent Hip-Hop Chicago mainstay MCs.

There is NO sign of the emo 808s and Heartbreaks Kanye West on the release at all on his MC end, but one can already hear some of the arrogant and/or confident delivery and swagger that he would be known for in his later solo work.

On some tracks it’s kind of weird hearing extremely blatant biting of DMX and Jay-Z (in his Roc La Familia mode) deliveries and song structures, but otherwise, the average listener will already get an idea of the possibilities of what was to come from everyone on this project. Overall, this is a pretty solid late 1990s era Hip-Hop album where all of the parties involved hold their own on all ends and worth getting in your rotation – if nothing else, World Record Holders is a pretty interesting “what were they doing back in the day”piece of music history.

What’s up Planet Ill fam this pre-4th of July weekend here in the States!

It’s time for the edition of Indiesent Exposure, Planet Ill’s weekly music column where I drop some FREE music downloads & info about quality Independent Music artists of different genres who deserve props for keeping things lively & non-cookie cutter status in the music world.

If you like what you hear & download in this section (some joints of which will hopefully be new to folks), PLEASE support (monetarily and otherwise) these artists as much as you can in the future – hit up their websites, purchase some product, go to their shows, etc.

This week’s Indiesent Exposure live at the BBQ(s) music is an eclectic mixture of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Electronica, Soul and Downtempo tunes ready to blast off on your music player.

Whenever you have the chance, please let all of the talented Indiesent Exposure artists and the Planet Ill crew know what you think of the music in our comments section!

Let’s get into it – download, sit back relax – hope you enjoy everything:

Ever since my very first Indiesent Exposure article (check it here) where I gave props & respect to Maryland Hip-Hop MC & Singer Phil Ade, the young talent has been making major moves as a part of the 368 Music Group roster.

Since the Starting on JV introduction days, he has been all over the place with his touring schedule and musical output, with his the latest full-length project to hit the masses on July 6th with the upcoming The Letterman mixtape hosted by Don Cannon. While waiting for that project, the masses have to tide themselves over with the 4 track appetizer of The Letterman Sampler.

While he definitely has a high caliber group of veteran guest musicians in the mix from Raekwon to Raheem DeVaughn and more, Phil Ade doesn’t get drowned out by them and firmly holds his own, steadily cranking out his style of fun and quality rap music for the average man.

His music contains just the right balance of energy, wit, storytelling skills and dexterous flows that in conjunction with with lush production values that works out well on each track regardless of the subject matter, whether it’s trying to kick it to the ladies on “Out Your Clothes” or the effects of fame on the “Hollywood RMX”.

It still amazes me that Phil Ade not getting the national props that’s deserved for his skill set (but then again, being on the magazine’s “Who’s Next” list kind of can completely stall a career, so who’s to say if that really matters), but good things come in time.

If you’re tired of the same ol’ Top 100 brand Hip-Hop in a box grooves, but don’t like your rap sounding insanely dated, get on the Phil Ade wave now – you won’t regret it.

I ran into this really nice sampler of mid-to-high tempo tunes Jazz, Hip-Hop and Downtempo tunes from our folk over in Europe with First World Records earlier this week and have been blasting it ever since.

The best way to get an idea of what the First World Records vibe is about can come directly from the source themselves:

First Word Records was born in 2003 as a collaboration between promoter Aly Gillani and deejay Andy H. Frustrated by not seeing the music they love get the exposure it deserved, the duo decided that there was a gap that needed filling.

As the year came to an end a group of musicians, deejays, designers, emcees and producers had come together to cook up the fresh new sound of “Two Syllables”, our debut compilation that was released in April 2004, preceded by a split 12? from Homecut Directive (ft Corinne Bailey Rae) and Tommy Evans.

Since then, the label has grown to house numerous artists, including kidkanevil, 6ix Toys, French production duo Souleance, The Simonsound, DMC regular Mike-L & the funkiest horn section in the UK, The Haggis Horns.

The sound of our output has developed as we have as individuals – the foundation is still the jazzy hip hop of our first releases, but encompasses everything we love in music.

Today’s Mathematics’ live broken beat might seem worlds apart from the retro funk of The Haggis Horns and the seismic beats of kidkanevil, but to us the common thread that runs through it all is clear.

All our music is truly modern soul music – conscious lyricism, tight beats and heavy basslines. This is music that’s equally at home in the clubs as it is leaking out of your late-night headphones. Like Duke Ellington said – “If it sounds good, it is good”.

Each of the groups on the First World Presents Two Syllables Vol. 2 collection has their own numerous EPs and full length releases from the label, so whether you like the Jazz Funk stylings of The Haggis Horns to kidkanevil’s straight ahead boom bap era sounding Hip-Hop grooves, there’s a lot more listeners can get into and enjoy that’s out of the norm.
