After a well-chronicled divorce from Nas, Kelis took a trip down Electric Avenue with stultifying results. Her upcoming album, Food, promises to be closer to that funky swagger that brought all the boys to her yard. Her latest leak from the record, Rumble is definitely a step in the right direction.
Rumble brings the love is war trope front and center, with Kelis looking a lost lover in the eyes and fighting the feelings of why is your ass back in my face, I thought we hated each other. The beat has a that essence of the nineties feel without feeling lost in it or dated. Kelis flexes her vocal chops in a way she wasn’t had for years with alight gravelly nuance that adds charm, pain and swagger in a jazz singer’s kinda way.
I can dig an album of this. So far, the Food is good. Rumble young woman Rumble. Enjoy.
