Cults Rock The Charlotte Fillmore

Cults

By Odeisel

Cults is a New York City-based band comprised of Brian Oblivion (awesome name) and vocalist Madeline Follin. Earlier this week we had the pleasure of taking in the band on the last leg of the Poison Pit tour at The Fillmore in Charlotte. For a supporting band, Cult shad a fairly elaborate set-up and light show. Most of the band was shrouded in darkness while Follin was the sole member under the spotlight. She looked like Jewel, but a little softer on the eyes. She didn’t move around much on stage but that’s to be expected when you’re doing a lot of singing.

Cults’ music is perfect for rainy day outdoor festivals. There are elements of 60’s pop soul-lite, the kind that Motown used to do before Stevie and Marvin had their come to Jesus moments and started addressing social issues. Their songs were well-constructed with some really solid breaks and their 5-piece backing band was well in sync. there were plenty of songs heavy in groove, featuring heavy drums.

The set was smooth and they transitioned between songs, most of which were from their self-titled EP, including You Know What I Mean. Cults had good crowd control and Follin was solid vocally, although occasionally weak on the high notes, nothing too egregious. Check out the vid. Cults. Live. Bung.
