Kanye West: New Slaves

People grow and evolve. We should never expect our art to be static, and Kanye West is no exception. There are many who miss the old back pack Kanye, along with his self deprecating humility and his socially conscious bent. Those days are in the rearview and Mr. West has morphed along with that distance, embracing more swag than substance. Whiile he remained daring musically, thematically there was regression. Fashion replaced passion.

It seems that Mr. West is hell bent on keeping everyone guessing. The immaculate Late Registration was followed by the enormous excess of Graduation, which gave way to the drunken sorrow of 808’s and Heart Breaks. Then came the complex simplicity of 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was more personal back from hell journey than societal observation. Three years later and Kanye West looks like he’s ready to change gears again with the caustic new singe, New Slaves.

It seems that Yeezy’s pending fatherhood is finding him in reexamination mode and on the outside of excess looking in. There are themes of the trappings of wealth, the illusion of status conveyed by new money, race, greed and so much, delivered with Kanye’s trademark hubris. Mr. West is about to start taking these muh’fucka’s back to school. We’re along for the ride. New Slaves. As if the old ones ever left.
