Uptown XO: Good Vibes (Video)

By Odeisel

Remember back in the early 90s when you could always catch a positive rap song that was dope? You had Brand Nubian putting out dope records, Main Source, Tribe, etc. It wasn’t that it was happy music or preachy, or even that had an overarching message, but it was feel good Hip-Hop. You heard dope rhymes, tightly constructed beats and a well-packaged video. Not that this record sounds like those record, but DMV/Diamond District representer Uptown XO has the spirit nailed on his new release, “Good Vibes.”

The track is punctuated by a key that hammers home the emotional tones at regular intervals and a vocal sample that keeps the emotion warmth. When you hear his delivery it is well composed and deliberate with tightly wound bars. He talks of politics and society without sounding like a clarion call for revolution. Call it everyman rage, with no intent to bring down the hose, but a real desire to have an even playing field and opportunity to exist.

The backyard barbecue setting heightens that homey feel. The views switch from the back yard to the streets, illustrating how both lifestyles are interwoven. You brave the concrete for the scratch to secure your piece of grass and peace of mind. In the end all you can hope for is friends, family, hot food, cold beer and a bit of “Good Vibes.” Uptown XO will show you how. Enjoy.
