Trailer Treat: James Bond – Skyfall

By Odeisel

James Bond is one of the truly immortal characters of modern cinema; larger than any individual actor, regardless of how seemingly seminal their take on him seems at the time. I grew up a fan of the Roger Moore smarmy exceedingly British incarnation, played extremely tongue-in-cheek. For many, Bond begins and ends with Sean Connery’s handsomely chauvinist masculine James Bond, light on the spy, easy on the eye and ready to throw hands. When Pierce Brosnan graduated from Remington Steel and Thomas Crown and took the mantle, I thought it couldn’t get any better. Brosnan had better than expected action chops and a natural cool and Anglo arrogance that was more charming than offensive. Then came Daniel Craig.

Built like a brick shit house, Craig was a natural for the physicality of Bond, and his crystal blue eyes belied an innate sensitivity that lent greatly to his love affair on Casino Royal with Money Penny. He also has the cold, roguish aesthetic that allowed Judi Dench to elicit bother motherly love and disdain for the occasionally off-the-radar Bond who could never seem to follow orders but got the job done. Casino Royale added another layer to the Bond mythos: they were very mortal, very temporary and just a rotating identity for 007s. In effect, each Bond we’ve ever known, for whom losing was inconceivable, have all essentially perished in the line of duty and all eventually lost. While many were disappointed with Royale’s Follow-Up, Quantum of Solace, Craig is back as Bond and seemingly better than ever, as cliché as that sounds with the trailer from the November US release of Skyfall.

The return of Bond was a brilliant marketing idea, linked to the 2012 Olympics, held in London and as part of the opening performance, Craig, as Bond Skydived from a helicopter with the queen. Next came the release of the trailer, which we have for you right here. The stakes have been raised, Q returns, as does Dench as M, and Javier Barden, one of the most memorable villains in resent movie history from No Country For Old Men, appears as the villain. Skyfall. The trailer. Enjoy.
