The Mic Or The Pulpit: Dollar Dolla Bill

By Juste J

Your favorite pastor is just like your favorite rapper; money obsessed. If your pastor, your spiritual leader and mentor is riding ‘round town in a Benz or Caddy, if they preach about how you can get money and material things, what makes them any different from a Jay or a Ross? You might say that the difference is God and the bible but if God didn’t want these rappers to be wealthy, then they would not be rich, right? If you are being told that God wants all true believers to be wealthy and the only one from your church that is living in a mansion is your pastor, there is something wrong.

Preachers, like Creflo Dollar and Joel Osteen say that God wants you to be insanely wealthy just like them but to get there you have to be a good Christian. Get saved, give abundantly to the church and claim your wealth just by speaking it. Because you see, God has already promised great prosperity to true believers. So if you don’t get there, it’s your fault for not doing what God tells you to do.

These preachers are giving you the blueprint but Jay-Z and his rapper peers have also given you the blueprint to wealth. Now you might say, hey justej, that’s fucking ridiculous but really, it isn’t. You want get rich? You wanna drive a nice car and live in a nice house? You wanna have all sorts of fancy things? Well then you can sell crack rocks, have a wicked jump shot or be deadly on the mic. But you can also do as Pastor Dollar says; you can follow the teachings that he’s preaching, straight from the good book. Rappers and preachers are telling you to get your money but they differ in their approach to getting rich. Personally, I would not want the person who is supposed to help me on my spiritual journey telling me how to get my paper up.

Rappers and preachers talk the same way, use their hands and gestures in the same way; in many ways, the rapper is a offshoot of the preacher. But presently, preaching has taken the prosperity theme found in rap music and wrapped it around the cloak of the Holy Ghost. Yeah, I said it you might as well listen to some new Kanye to get that inspiration to get rich. Ohh but Kanye and ‘em, they are not “godly”; well who the fuck told you that, your pastor? The same one telling you that you too can drive a Cadillac STS? Give me a break with the double standards fam. Materialism, whether on wax or from the pulpit, is still that, materialism. There is no fucking difference to me.

I am not blinded by faith and religion does not have a strangle hold on my life, thank God. I am not a true blue believer, not in rap music or religious observance, they both leave me wanting. Rap music has been derided for years as being materialistic, especially in these times when so many people are struggling to make ends meet. But now we also have preachers who are just as avaricious and money hungry as rappers and they get a pass because they are so-called people of faith.

When you are out clutching your bible, ready to call out rappers and rap music, make sure you do the same thing with your pastors, check them on that shit too; it’s not very Christian to be a hypocrite. And yeah, if you are a true believer who hasn’t received that promised blessing, you must be doing something wrong fam. Maybe you followed the wrong advice; maybe you should have worked on that jump shot 20 years ago.
