R.Kelly: Feelin’ Single

By Odeisel

If any man has ever had his hand on the pulse on the mindset or urban American sensibility and the soul of Black folk it’s R.Kelly. Despite the crazy shit that has gone  on in his life (including the piscapades) he just knows how to touch your inner n***a in a way that perhaps no one ever has musically. He has changed directions so many times stylistically but at the heart his sentimentality remains close to his base. His latest single “Feeling Single” is another example of Kelly’s ability to remain musically sharp while delivering highly danceable, singalongable (if you can spell it and people know what you’re talking about, it’s a word) songs that make you think about certain situations in your life.

She says she still loves you but you feel the relationship drifting further apart. You get to the point that you’ve had enough, yet you still wrestle with those old memories and the good times you’ve had. You feel like it’s over though and you get the feeling that she’s moved on to someone else. Sure she’s out with her “friends” and you know you got it going on so you say fuck that I’m going to boogie. Almost everyone has been there before and R.Kelly just hit that spot.

As usual the music is pristine. There is a string driven undercurrent that gives you a dash of the disco life and a milky funky bassline that smooths the entire song out. Low volume horns that come on during the bridges that help enhance mood and bring the track to crescendo. The keyboards are subtle and everything is just tightly wound around his vocals which ebb and flow exactly where they should.

Whether you love him or you just can’t get over the whole pedo thing, the man’s music is impeccable. “Feeling Single” will light up the adult clubs the way “Step In the Name Of Love” did years ago. There will be drunken women and men swaying with their half empty glasses held high jamming to this, and people’s mamas cleaning their houses to it. Another win for the souls of Black folk. The kids can have that Chris Brown shit.

Enjoy.
