Album Review: Tech N9ne- Klusterfuk

By Ahmad Awadallah

It seems like the band ¡Mayday!’s star status skyrocketed into the higher-echelons of Hip-Hop when Lil’ Wayne cosigned them almost two years ago. Since then, the multifaceted group has worked with the likes of NORE, Cee-Lo, Ace Hood and most notably scored a record deal with one of the most popular Indie artists, Tech N9ne. The Strange Music general just released his newest EP, Klusterfuk, which is produced entirely by the Miami-based band. The best analogy to describe the new effort would be like the candy Good & Plenty Licorice candy. At first it is sort of acrimonious, but after a while it becomes intensely pleasing and by the time you’re completely won over and craving more, the EP is finished. Tech solidifies his position as one of the most innovative guys in music with this project as the sound of the six-track EP stays true to the name of the imprint, Strange.

Tech kicks off the EP with a steady flow on the track “Klusterfuk” as he rhymes about how converting from Christianity to Islam was so drastic for him as a child and at the age of 17 dipped from forced religious perceptions. The synths are grooved in nicely and Mayday member Plex Luthor’s sharp electric guitar chords add some much needed attitude. “Can’t Stand Me” will instantly grab the attention of your ear buds will its sullen Pipe Organ notes. Tech keeps it a hundred on this one as raps about people that hate on him based on pure stereotypes. He even hints at a past relationship with a white woman that might have gone sour due to their “mamma, their daddy, their greasy ass granny,” as Tech says. Hands down the standout track is one is “Awkward.” Not only is the production a mellow breather from the bunch and Tech goes in harder, but the best part is the industry anecdotes that Tech drops throughout the track, especially at the end when he speaks about a convo between himself and Grand Hustle rapper B.O.B. The Atlanta rapper requests some “tools” and instead Tech awkwardly offers religious advice.

It seems like Tech has made another great signing and the proof is in the new project. They are pretty much certified after being stamped by the biggest mainstream artist and an underground king has also taking a liking , therefore their new album Take Me To Your Leader is sure to be a classic.
