“Real journalism is publishing something someone else does not want published – the rest is just public relations.” George Orwell
With so much drama in the world today in our communities on both macro and micro levels, it’s always strange to see the news or people that claim to be journalists talking about all kinds of silly things and never what’s going on. The Firing Squad is here to take aim at all that is wrong with the world, starting with our own communities.Three men of color with no censor and no objectives but truth, justice and common sense. Each episode will deal with hot-button issues with honesty, straight talk, and humor whenever possible . No personality is untouchable, and no one is spared the venom, or the praise whenever fit.
The format of the show is simple five topics a week with 5 minutes devoted to each topic, and a close by each individual member featuring a verbal shot of their own choosing.
This episode we talk Concord mania and the retail madness that ensues whenever new (old) Jordans are released. Is it endemic to Black people? Why isn’t it as publicized when there are sales on Louboutins or David’s Bridal sales where women are strong-arming each other over dresses. Is it any different from people camping out for days to get the latest iPhone release (minus the violence). Does media have anything to do with it or is it simply supply and demand forces taking hold of these people? Is the desire to have things weakening us as a human community?
Where do we stand on Kwanzaa? While the principles are worthy enough to adhere to, should that be something to be lived, rather than celebrated as an event? Is the true spirit of it been ritualized to oblivion like Christmas?
New Year’s resolutions: Why do we make them? Do they ever come to fruition? Should we stop making them in the face of trying to make them work? Why don’t people have the wherewithall to carry them out?
Why do people let off shots for New Year’s? What are they trying to hit? What does it mean? Should Brooklyn stop the madness? Is it because they can’t afford fireworks?
We also talk about what we are looking forward to for the coming year and our expectation for 2012.
