Planet Ill’s Best Rap Features Of 2011

By shelz.

Lists, lists and more lists.  Yeah, we’re down.

Some folks do all of this whining about list makers being opinionated egomaniacs and calling something “the best” when you haven’t heard everything.  And those folks may have a point.  But I mean hell, we’ve been posting nothing but opinion all year and that hasn’t stopped anyone from joining in.

So here we go, some more of what Planet Ill thinks rocked this year.  Next up are those sneaky feature guests who showed up to lend a hand and ended up handing the head honcho his own ass on his own record. Then again, all of these weren’t total wipe outs.  Some were just massively interesting back and forth between two talented artists.  Either way, these folks really made the most of their 30 seconds of fame.

Plant Ill’s best Hip-Hop features of 2011.  Enjoy.

Young Jeezy Feat. Jill Scott – “Trapped” from TM103

I’m pretty sure Jeezy could get spanked by almost anyone lyrically expect maybe Wacka Flocka or Gucci, so Jill Scott showing up and getting the best of Jeezy doesn’t surprise me.  J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League whipped up a helluva track as well.  Come to think about it, was Jeezy even needed here?  Hmmmm.

Game Feat. Kendrick Lamar –  “The City” from The Red Album

Anyone who had issues with Lamar’s flow or lack of punch can ease up after hearing this.  He really owns this song.  Sorry Game.

Everyone but Shyne –   “Outro” from Carter 4

I’m not sure what the hell happened here or why that Shyne verse was left as is in the blaze of glory that was … well .. everyone else. I’m also a bit concerned about this being the best song on Carter 4 considering Wayne was nowhere to be found.

The Roots Feat. Phonte –  “One Time” from undun

Phonte showed all kinds of emcee muscle this year.  He might just be the most complete artist in urban music this year.  I just wish The Roots had put him on the hook of this song, then 2011 Phonte domination could have been complete.

Pharoahe Monche Feat. Jean Grae – “Assassins” from We Are Renegades

Best rap song of the year?  Maybe.  Jean Grae owns the best feature of the year?  Definitely.  She is certified bad ass.  Buy some of her music.

Phonte Feat. Pharoahe Monch – “We Go Off” from Charity Starts At Home

First of all the 5th Dimension sample is killer.  Phonte gives an easy lob to Pharoahe who takes it and proceeds to run circles are Phonte and this production.  It’s a shame Monch got the best of his host, but when he’s invited you have to expect it.

Bad Vs. Evil Feat. Slaughterhouse – “Loud Noises” from Hell: The Sequel

There is no point in arguing over who has the best verse.  They all do.

Ghostface Killah Feat. Roc Marciano and Killa Sin – “The Black Diamonds” from Legendary Weapons

I’m not convinced yet.  I was probably one of six people who didn’t like Marcberg.  But I guess I’m getting a glimpse of what everyone is hearing here.  Hopefully it will continue.

Kendrick Lamar Feat. Ab Soul – “Ab Soul’s Outro” from Section.80

Ab-Soul probably couldn’t have done this without Terrace Martin’s track.  I think he caught the movement and exhilaration of the music and it brought out something in him we don’t normally hear.  Whatever the cause, it’s spectacular.

Raekwon Feat. Ghostface Killa –  “Rock & Roll” from Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang

It’s Tony Starks.  Enough said.
