There is so much I can talk about here. I’ve seen Sweet Charity a gabillion times so hearing “Big Spender” sampled is always a plus in my book. I’m sure y’all remember Freeway’s “Roc-A-Fella Billionaires”… Ahh the good ole days.
Anyway, the tune that made the film famous is back and in the hands of Kanye West and Nick Cannon. The track this time around is pretty simple with some Asian accents, heavy thump and a cork pop.
Mariah’s hubby and king of the runway are an odd couple, definitely. But I’m assuming this was made when West still took Cannon’s calls. You can tell from West’s flow that this song is nowhere near new. He’s not yelling and growling yet.
And while I’m sure some rap aficionados have their elitist noses all crumpled, Cannon is not the worst rapper any of us have ever heard. Plus he makes more money than your favorite rapper. I always thought that was the tipping point, but what do I know.
The pair make fun of baby ballers and the fake affluent. It’s a common subject, but Cannon can tap dance all over this because he really is rich. His delivery is slowed, sometimes slurred to fit with the beat, conjuring Slick Rick a time or two. All of his jokes aren’t all that funny, but were you expecting them to be. Kanye is talking about the days before the platinum plaques and his most adamant boast is that he has backstage passes. Like I said.. ahh the good ole days.
What we have here is someone who isn’t taking himself too seriously having a bit of fun in the studio. Cannon said he was joking around with some of his friends and this was the product. I’m not mad.
