Single And Loving It?: Talking Shades With Stevie Boi

By Single Black Female

Sunglasses are my favorite accessory, after shoes, purses and jewelry, that is. Shades up the cool factor of any look, so when the ladies at 360•  Media invited me to view out of this world pieces from Stevie Boi’s 2012 “Coexist” eyewear collection, you know I was there! If you said to yourself “Stevie who?” It’s okay (come out from under that rock once in a while) because I’m sure you’ve heard of Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Rihanna; just a few of the A-listers who have donned the 22 year old’s unique designs. Stevie Boi’s styles are more couture than UV protecting, but the wow factor that has created a buzz among some of our favorite celebs can’t be denied.

I should warn you, a journey onto his site Stevieboi.com is not your average shopping experience. Stevie Boi’s “sunglasses” don’t play it safe with mere plastic and dark tints. The Boi steps completely out of the box to cover our eyes in metal, spikes and crazy creations that ensure you will be the talk and stand out in every crowd.

After the mini fashion show (which should have been dubbed eye candy for eye wear with all the tasty male-and female models) I got to chat with Stevie Boi. Despite working with celebrities, juggling design, running a business and his own rising stardom, he is approachable, humble and like his shades, easy on the eyes. I asked the in-demand designer about his decision to make sunglasses when creating fragrances, footwear and clothes is the trend these days. He admitted, “It [designing shades]was a hobby until someone saw me in the street and ripped them off my face.” Whoa, I hope it was someone he knew because clotheswhores will commit crimes of passion for their fashion.

He chose to make it a profession because, as he puts it; “Everyone likes to wear them and sunglasses sell. Every accessory sells, but when I look at someone I don’t look at their shoes unless they’re fly. I focus on the face and eyes.”

Even though style, design and handling increased popuarity are a walk in the park for Stevie Boi, he won’t label himself a success, yet. “I’m not successful until I get to a certain point,” he says. “This wasn’t planned but the shades opened more doors than expected, now I want to take my original plan and mix the two. Whether it works or fails I have God on my side so I know I’m good.”

What?! An old-fashioned, God loving Southern man? Just what the love doctor ordered for this single lady stuck in the concrete jungle of modern day Sodom and Gomorra. But I was on business not pleasure and I’m sure I wasn’t his type anyway. Regaining my focus, I dug a little deeper to find out if this original plan had anything to do with his upcoming MTV project.

“It’s something I’m doing with a new network called MTV Style, right now we’re filming the pilot. It’s me styling celebs, I’m a designer and stylist but that’s not what people know of me. I film with Amber Rose, Alex Morgan, a lot of celebrities. It’s been really exciting.”

What is the receipe for sucess? If it’s famous clients, an impending show with one of the biggest networks on television or a rapidly expanding eyewear business, then Mr. Stevie Boi certainly is not far from it.You can see Stevie Boi on MTV Style in Winter 2012. check out his collections at stevieboi.com

Wonder what I’ll get into next week…

Sincerely Yours,
