And The Giraffe: Something For Someone

By Odeisel

Occasionally we at the Planet sift through the hundreds of email submisions and give some light to acts we think may have something. We know that most fo them will probably stay on the fringe, it’s just the nature of numbers. But we’d like to think that even if they never become superstars, that everyone gets a shot at some light. Today’s lucky band is a group called And the Giraffe. They have a 6 song EP called Something for Someone and they bring to the table some somber tunes with elements of folk, late 60’s Rock and a hint of depression.

The mellow on these tunes falls short of somnambulism but it’s got that pill popped haze as the result of slow smoley vocals and earthy guitarplay. This is not party starter material and these guys willnot be confused with anyoneon the high side of life but it’s pensive and filled with critique of suburbia and the poison of sedentary lifestyle.

“Masquerade” speaks of peopel living in the past and engaging in escapism, never addressing the misery of their present until the walls cave in on them. This isn’t for the squeamish. The sonic star of this album is the final track, “Still,” which bosts a basic rhtym but an undercurrent of optimism flaunted by the repeated “We’re gonna be big stars some day” refrain that opens the vocals of the track.

Overall, i think the coudl use an infusion of energy to break up the monotony. The convergence of country, folk and retro-Rock on Something For Someone is cool in doses, but an EP is just about all you can take without having it affect your mood. If you’re looking to zone out, this may be for you. Not the greatest, but you can see this catchign on in some circles.
