To be a great debater, you have to know the issues inside out. You could be forced to argue the yea or any of a subject at the drop of a hat so you have to be ready to either defend or defuse. The present Hip-Hop generation is stuck between honoring their forebears and clearing them out to start their own run. Skyzoo has successfully navigated both sides of this line and his latest mix tape The Great Debater is infused with the essence of classic Hip-Hop while crafting songs that are fit for today’s Hip-Hop.
The tape features production from frequent collaborators !llmind (“Atypical” “Test Drive”),and label head 9th Wonder (“Designer Drugs” “Get Him To The Greek”) as well as multiple tracks from E. Jones (“Inheritance” “For The Sleepers”) and Best Kept Secret (“Complicated Rhythm” “We Here”) as well as a host of other heat makers. The result is a rich collection of original production for Skyzoo to run through except for the masterful closing note “The Definitive Prayer,” featuring David Axelrod’s classic “Holy Thursday.”
Listen to this Skyzoo tape and soak it all in. You’re going to need multiple listens to get all of the flavor and the lines from each song. They aren’t the typical two-line punch line setup, but carefully woven rhymes that stack on each other like Lego pieces. Take it, break it apart and try to put it back together. If you like rhymes like that, I promise you won’t have had this much fun in years. The Great Debater. Enjoy
