Goblin: With The Deluxe Platter You Get A Burger And A Shake

By shelz.

Tyler the Creator’s Goblin is finally here and if you haven’t checked our review, please do.  Planet Ill took time to peruse the regular version of the album, but Goblin’s Deluxe edition, for those who have access to two extra dollars, comes with a few more songs and a tons of extra attitude.  So let’s take a quick peek at the additional tracks.

“Untitled 63″ is a short instrumental with a jazz foundation that’s been floating around for some time.  I’m not quite sure if I can imagine Tyler’s lyrics on this.  It’s moody, but in an optimistic way, and that’s not really his style.

The other pair, “Burger” and “Steak Sauce” crept quietly into the internet spotlight a few days prior to the Goblin’s release to a mixed bag of opinion.  But one thing is for sure, Tyler has an axe to grind.

“Burger” is simple.  It’s made of beef.  There is a myriad of other themes here, of course.  Per Tyler’s normal habit, the lyrics fly from one topic to another quickly.  But this “war” with the wingman of the NMC sounds like a broken heart to me. Getting your Lorena Bobbit on, just to hide the evidence between the chips and the cookies is an act born of rage and passion.

Shhhh Shake.  He’s at your window.

“Steak Sauce” is the beef topping.  The track features waves of synth with digital drums.  It’s similar enough in spirit to “Untitled 63” to make me think twice about hearing Tyler over it.  The lyrics include  a barrage of comments about masturbation and having sex with white women, scaring grown folks and warmed-over old man rap lines.  Then of course, jabs at 2DB. Which might be getting just as old as saying you’re sick.

Anyway, it’s obvious why this trio didn’t make the main section of the album and were relegated to Goblin afterthoughts. Not horrible, but meh at best.  Hodgy Beats’ chorus on “Burger” is about as good as it gets here. A “Burger” with “Steak Sauce” and a Shake.  Enjoy.
