Diggy Simmons & Bruno Mars: Click Clack Away

By Odeisel

Bruno Mars has no intention of getting off his rocket ship to stardom. He’s stayed hard at work despite occasional legal issue to fill Nate Dog’s spot as the preeminent hook man in Hip-Hop. While his brand of garnish ain’t as hard as Nate, if you’re music fits in that lane, Bruno on your track is the icing on the cake.

Diggy, son of Run, has been putting in work over the course of the last year, with more success than his older siblings. He’s nothing to what his father was, but he’s got commercials and endorsements and seems well on his way to viability as an artist. The duo deliver a tale of teenybopper love on  “Click Clack Away.”

Since Bon Jovi gave us “You Give Love A Bad Name” over 25 years ago, the love as a bullet thing has been done many times. This is version 5.0, bathed in puppy love. The husky, old school drums (Heavy D and Biz Markie’s “We Write the songs/Grand Daddy I.U.’s “Something New”) on the bottom are playfully muted by a tinkering piano and splashy synth. Soft, dithering wind provides spectacle to the back ground.

Mars’ vocals are the highlight of the song, emitting all that youthful exuberance present on “Nothing But You.” His emotion is contagious and that innocent feeling he brings to this track just radiates. Diggy is cute but harmless on this. His rhyme scheme is pedestrian and his delivery is decidedly kid rhymer. That’s not a bad thing (although I don’t know what “spontanuity” means) he doesn’t do anything to distinguish himself from any other child rapper. If this was white labeled you wouldn’t be able to tell who it was.

There is star power on this track but it’s all Bruno Mars. The song will be a novel success and will be pushed because of the principals on the track. In fashion, they say accessories can make or break an outfit. In Pop-Hop, if you have the right hook, you can walk that walk without much scrutiny. “Click Clack Away.” It’s got nothing on you, Bon Jovi.
